  • Loy,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • Anonymous654123,

Right now your computer has a "hacked and cracked" installation of XP Media Center Edition.  The report is showing that you have a "retail" installation (license type) of Media Center.

Windows License Type: Retail                  Windows OS version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.2.0.med

The problem with that is there is no such thing as a Retail license for Media Center (IOW they are not offered for sale in retail packaging that you would find at a major electronics retailer).  Genuine copies would have shown up in the report as either "systembuilder/OEM" or "OEM SLP."  That is why I call it "hacked and cracked."  As I understand it, this is the result of installing a crack available on the internet that adds Media Center functionality to a non-Media Center installation of XP.  This is noted in the "file mismatch" section:  c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe

You should remove the nongenuine installation of XP now installed and purchase a genuine copy of the XP of your choice from a trusted local or online retailer.

I am sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is with the Operating System and why it is not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install the operating system is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VL editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and version of MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of the Operating System is an unauthorized installation. In any case, please uninstall the non-genuine installation of the operating system to alleviate any complications which may arise from the non-genuine status of your system. As a customer there are options available to you for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine.  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

  • Hello,

i have tried everything said above and nothing worked.

Problem: I cannot activate windows. When I log in it stops on the welcome screen and asks for activation, when I press YES, it lets me activate. I activated by internet, it said that I passed succsessfully, but when I tried to log in it still asked for activation, I activated again by phone - everithing went fine! - but when I tried to log in, it still stopped and asked for activation. AND when I tried to activate, it said that I have already activated.

When first I tried to activate, it even did not give me a activation ID, I got it after internet activation.

    My log:

  • I finally did it.

The tool that helped was 312295.exe from microsoft, described above, but the only problem using that tool was, that it could not be launched in safe mode, needed network support or something else.

    So, happy fixing!

    Thank YOU!
