Answered help to pass 70-513 and the exam is so badly designed

    Hello all,

    first off, do you have an effective tip for passing 70-513. The big issue with this exam is that like PMP it is testing your memory and not your understanding. These days everything can be looked up on the Internet. If Micorsoft wants to make sure people are using the right techniques then they should design a site that would have all  the (most used)patterns with a great search capability and then get people to use it.

    I have designed many educational solutions and I think after so many years Microsoft still has not got it!!!

    Your help on how to quickly memorize all those configuration parameters and points is most appreciated.

    Greetings,

    I have to disagree with your assessment of this exam. The challenge with this or any exam is that you need to discriminate between those who are qualified and those who are not in a way that is reasonable.  Given an unlimited amount of time I personally would give you some time and have you build some services to meet business scenarios. This is not a practical or scalable testing solution.

    You wil find that this exam (and most TS level exams at Microsoft) do a decent job of testing a candidate's ability to apply knowledge, not just recollect facts. There are indeed a lot of configuration parameters that you will need to know. More importantly, you need to understand the semantics of how WCF services are structured. Given a scenario in an exam question, you should be able to look at the answer choices and identify which answer choices use the correct architectural pattern.  Then you can identify the correct answer choice more easily.

    The best way to study for this exam is to work with the product extensively.  You can use some of the following resources:

    http://www.amazon.com/MCTS-Self-Paced-Training-Exam-70-503/dp/0735625654/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1336997844&sr=1-1, this is the self paced training kit for the earlier version of this exam (.NET 3.5).  If you use this kit you will need to look at the delta between .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.

    Also, try a practice exam from MeasureUp.com or Selftestsoftware.com.  Both of these vendors provide decent practice exams for Microsoft Developer certifications. Pay particular attention to the explanations that each question provide and the links that point to additional information.

    You can also post questions on Microsoft Learning's site:  http://borntolearn.mslearn.net/  The page has posts from the people who work on Microsoft exams. 

    Lastly, get involved. You can be listed in MSL's SME (subject matter experts) database and help influence these exams.  http://connect.microsoft.com/site862
