Convert picklists into general text field?

Does CRM allow for Picklists to be changed to a general text field without loosing any existing data held for each contact?

Datatypes for attributes cannot be changed after the attribute has been created. You can achieve this conversion using some code and the sdk though.

I don't think you can. If you remove a picklist field to create a new field with the same name the original data will be deleted I believe.

I agree with BSimsons though that you could use the SDK or yo ucould use Scribe or another migration tool to meet your needs.

I suggest to use Javascript to hide a picklist and copy data from picklist to the text. In this case you should achieve what you want (you will have data in text field and you will have old data.

You can create a new text field then using a workflow or import wizard, update the text field with the existing picklist value for each record then remove the picklist field from the form. You can also update the field using the other methods recommended if that works better for you.
