Connecting to a Network Share without Login Credentials

Hi, Im new here. I hope I posted this to the right place!

I was recently given the task to manage the computers at our school, and I have ran into a problem. We were having issues with an older Windows XP Home workstation, so I just replaced it with a much newer system (It runs XP Home also) and I am having issues with making a shortcut to a file in a shared folder on our network. The folder that I am trying to get it connected to is located on a server running Windows Server 2003. I have placed the new system in the same workgroup as the older system, and I am able to gain access the folder, but only if I supply the Login Credentials for the server first. I can access it just fine after that but if I restart the system I have to re-supply the login credentials to be able to access the file. The system that I replaced never had asked for the credentials when I would open the file, and the shortcut was setup the same way as I have it set up on the new system. Just a direct shortcut pointing to the target like this: \\ServerName\FolderName\FileName.exe. I have even tried mounting the shared folder as a network drive with reconnect at logon selected, and it gave me a "Could not connect to network drives" error when I would turn the computer on. I have no idea how the other system was set up to be able to access the file without supplying the logon informaiton every time. Any help would be much appreciated!

The old XP Computer may have stored credentials.

As an alternative you can setup the share to accept anonmous access.

Thanks for the information. I Looked at the old computer and it didn't have any stored credentials. Also, Neither of the computers will let me add new credentials in the "Manage Network Passwords" so you must not be able to do that on Windows XP Home. I have gotten it to where it will sort of work now. I created a script to run at startup that mounts the shared folder as a network drive, which gives me access to the file without the password. That will work for now, but I would like to find a more secure way to do it. I don't really like the fact that all it takes for someone to access the drive is to open My Computer and click on the networked drive. Is there any way that the old computer was being authenticated by it's computer name or username somehow? The user account wasn't set up with a password if that makes any difference.

In a workgroup you usually just use matching user ids and passwords on all computers...thus the workstation and the server. That should prevent the logon prompt.
