Exchange 2010 installation - Error, A reboot from a previous installation is pending.

    Spørgsmål

  • Dear All,

I recently had to uninstall the Exchange. Having redomained the server etc... I am now trying to reinstall the server and everytime I get the: Error, A reboot from a previous installation is pending. Please restart the system and rerun the setup. I have done this a half dozen to no avail. I read in another post to delete the renamependinfg...key. I have done this but the key keeps reappear and basically itis impossible to reinstall the Exchange.

    Please advise!

    Kind regards,

    Bina

  • Hi Sukh,

thanks mate, in fact I managed to resolve the issue and eventually installed the Exchange completely BUT my happiness was short lived.

after installation and the updates I launched the EMC and it failed to launch.

Last week I had to run RENDOM to rename my domain which I did and all went just fine. The Exchange was uninstalled prior to this.

lets say DomainA changed to DomainB. The box is called Mailsvr.

Below is the error message which indicated that somehow the powershell is trying to find the DomainA (the old non existant domain).

I will be very very grateful if you kindly point me to some direction to sort this out as I need to get the Exchange up & running by the weekend mate.

    error message comes below:

    ------------------------

The attempt to connect to http://mailsvr.DomainA.com/PowerShell using “Kerberos" authentic failed: Connecting to remote server failed with the Following error message', WinRM cannot process the request. The Following error occurred while using Kerberos authentication: The network path was not found.

    Possible causes are:

-The user name or password specified are invalid.

-Kerberos is used when no authentication method and no user name are specified.

-Kerberos accepts domain user names, but not local user names.

-The Service Principal Name (SPN) for the remote computer name and port does not exist.

-The client and remote computers are in different domains and there is no trust between the two domains. After checking For the above issues, try the Following:

-Check the Event Viewer for events related to authentication.

-Change the authentication method; add the destination computer to the WirRM TrustedHosts configuration setting or use HTTPS transport.

Note that computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be authenticated.

  • Binah57, some questions for you:

    1. Can you run EMS without any issues?
    2. Are you able to load the Exchange PsSnapin within PowerShell (not EMS) or you get an error message when you do?
       (Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.E2010)

If the above works, then it could be a simple MMC-Error (I have seen them before)
In the filesystem, go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MMC and see if you have a file called "Exchange Management Console". If you do, delete it and try and open EMC again and see if that works.

  • Hi Gents,

sorry for the late reply, I have been puling my hair all to this minute...

Yes Sukh I have. here is the story. ok, shall I say that I followed all the advises (gratefully of course..) to no avail. in the end I took the following steps:

uninstalled the Ex2010, uninstalled the AD Services, demoted the server, renamed the netbios, made it a member of the domain and reinstalled the AD services. Started the re-installation of EX2010 SP1.

it then came up with: RMS Shared Identity user 'CN=FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8b-8179-4148-93bf-00a95fa1e042,CN=Users,DC=exchange,DC=com'....

I then took the steps in http://www.n2networksolutions.com/2010/12/17/after-removing-exchange-2010-and-trying-to-reinstall-you-get-error-database-is-mandatory-on-usermailbox-property-name-database/ step by step which EXACTLY describes the issue I had.

Upon reattempt teh HUB Transport came up with another error :  RMS Shared Identity user FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8b-8179-4148-93bf-00a95fa1e042 not found

I have once again uninstalled the EX2010 and now SERIOUSLY thinking to reformat and reinstall the server from scratch and try the EX2010 afreash.

    do you agree?

currently the EX2010 has been completely (I hope) removed from the server and I have a feeling I will just get back in the loop of errors from one to another :-(

    1. It does seem messy, I know dom rename isnt supported so that's why you have removed Exch and then done it, but seems like the Exch removal wasnt clean.
    2. You can try to remove  - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978776
    3. Also, to be clear, how many exch servers are/were there in your env?

  •

yes sukh, I have already been there.

I only have (had) ONE Exchange server in the whole environment. thankfully it was not still LIVE bvut just about to go live when all this stuff happened, hence the reason I am in such hurry mate.

Sukh, in the link it suggests how to remove the FederatedEmail... In my adsiedit there is no trace of this " CN=FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8b-8179-4148-93bf-00a95fa1e042 container" to delete! so I have nothing to delete.

Frankly I have never been so frustrated by any application to this extent.

do you know of a link to completely uninstall Ex2010 SP1? otherwise given the circumstanc I honestly see no choice other than killing the box!

  • Hi Bina,

    I can understand your frustration.
There is another way to uninstall Exchange 2010, that is manually removing it. But it's not the supported way.

Now it's your choice, you want to do it manually or just simple formate the server and delete the server object from Adsiedit.

You don´t have to use adsiedit to remove "CN=FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8b-8179-4148-93bf-00a95fa1e04". It is very visible in the Users Container in ADUC.

    1. So your Exch 2010 server is uninstalled but there seems to be references still in AD.  Depending on your time constraints, the quickest would be to remove the server object from adsiedit and format the server and do a fresh install.
    2. There's load of articles such as - http://www.alihassanlive.com/e2k3/2010/11/1/how-to-manually-remove-exchange-20072010-from-a-server-and-a.html /http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchange2010/thread/d058717e-bf70-4449-91c2-fa00b47d415f

When you prepared the server for Exchange 2010 (installed IIS etc), did you do it before or after the you promoted the server to be DC?

Just thought to reboot both servers ONCE again for the last time. This time it failed drastically..anyway just one question though!

I will rebuild the box tomorrow, should I delete all the so-called Exchange related user objects in the ADUC before trying to install the Ex10 on the newly built server? these objects are:

    MsExchDiscovery e0dc1c29-89c3-4034-b678-e6c29d823ed9

should the new server be named something different. basically any advise as to what the new server should or should not be?

Yes, You can absolutely delete these Mailboxes:

  • Hi Bina,
Nice to hear from you again!

Make sure that you have Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 installed and that you run the installation of Exchange 2010 with SP1
I would not recomend that you install .Net seperatly. It is already included in the OS.

    Setup Instructions:

    1. Download and install Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs
    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17062

    2. Open an elevated Powershell Console and run import-module servermanager
    3. Copy/Paste to the console: Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy -Restart
    4. Aftopen PS again, run set-service NetTcpPortSharing -StartupType Automatic
    5. run setup.com /preparead
    6. Start Exchange 2010 installation
    7. Download and install RU3

With these installation steps, you don´t need to add any features in server manager manually.
    Best of Luck,
    Martina

  • Hi Bina,

I hope the installation runs on smoothly, but if something unexpected problems arise, please create a new thread in this forum. I think that this thread is getting a bit long now and maybe a bit hard to follow and we should not forget that the mail problem "Exchange 2010 installation - Error, A reboot from a previous installation is pending" is solved. (The registry key PendingFileRenameOperations can be deleted)

But please post a link to the new thread here and this one to the new thread (if you need to create one) so that it becomes easy for everybody to follow what´s been done/not done.

    :Martina

Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question.

  • Hi Martina,

    Hope U R well.

for info: rebuilt the server from scratch, made it member server, all updates + SP1 installed. logged in with the domain admin account and took your instructions step by steps until:

the setup.com \prepareAD generated the below error and stopped: (as U will see the error points to an invalid DN (Domain Name!?)

will very much appriciate your advise mate.

  • Dear martina,

was just looking in DNS and found a folder under the Forward Lookup Zones as:

    _msdcs.MyoldDomanName.com

I also have another folder which is MyCurrentDomainname.com

shall I delete this erronious _msdcs.MyOldDomainName.com folder?

    Cheers,

    Bina

  • Yes, I guess you can delete old _msdcsMyDoldDomain.com (I haven´t done a Forest domain rename) but I can not think of a reason to keep it.
BUT, before you do make sure that the new _msdcs.newdomain.com has updated records for dC, domain, gc, pdc. The records in this zone is very important!!

  • Thanx Martins,

The _msdcsMyoldDomain.com is in the ROOT of Forward Lookup Zone whereas the _msdcsMyNewDomain.com in inside the NewDomainName.com under Forward Lookup Zone but has got all the records of the -msdcsMyoldDomainname.com.

naturally this erroneous -msdcs...folder in in all the DNS's in other three DC's to which I have access to. I can delete them all one after the other followed by repadmin /suncall to nail it in.

I am really gratefull to you for the time you put in to this thing helping me out mate.

    Rgds,

    Bina

  • The DNS Zone Msdcs_MyOldDomain.com is Active Directory Integrated so there is no reason to log on to every DNS and delete the zone. Just do it on one server and the Delete will be replicated to the rest.

I would think that your new domain MyNewDomain.com DNS Zone has different setting for replication set.
That is why _Msdcs is stored inside the zone.

I am glad to help, but don´t forget that you should create a new thred for new Problems/Questions :)

  • Hi Martina,

I have followed the link. It wants me to navigate to the CN=Microsoft exchange....

well in the adsiedit under both Configurations & Default naming Context I have no such CN!!

Under the Default naming context I ONLY have OU=Microsoft Exchange Security Groups

however under Configuration I have CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange, CN=ViaExMail (the organisation name that prepareAD stopped asking me to add /OrganizatioonName:)

where elkse can I possibly search for the CN?

    Thanx,

    Bina

  • You must follow the steps in the link I gave you ADSI Edit | Configuration
    CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=viacloudcorporate,DC=com

Nothing has to be done in the Default naming context

  • Martina,

ok, unless I am being really dumb, adsiedit.msc | Rht Click on ADSI Edit | connect to... | select a well known Naming Context: | click and chose Configuration

    left hand pain: Configuration [viacloudcorporate.com] /CN=Configuration, DC=viacloudcorporate, DC=Com

when clicking on the plus sign to expand, the CN's I have under neath are:

displaySpecifiers | ExtendedRights | ForestUpdates | LostAndFoundConfig | NTDS Quotes | Partitions | Physical Locations | Services | Sites | WellKnown Security Principals

so I HAVE NO CN=Microsoft Exchange!

Please tell me where I am being wrong?

    Cheers,

    Bina

  • Martina,

I am being really embarrassed about this mate and might as well be having a brain hemorrhage.

ok, the CN=Microsoft Exchange in UNDER Servises in adsi.

Rgh Click and properties as the link suggests. Found the otehrwellknownobject. Click on Edit to change its value and get rid of the VERY long string (as the link suggests). As I click Edit I get " The is no editor registered to handle attribute type". so I cannot set its value to <NO Set>.

so yes I was being really dumb :-(

    cheers,

    Bina

  • Well, next time you will not have any problem browsing in ADSIEdit :)

    >>As I click Edit I get " The is no editor registered to handle attribute type". so I cannot set its value to <NO Set>.<<

That is actually enough to click Edit (even thou you the message "no edito"
The long otherwellknow* should be gone now and you can run the setup.com /preparead again

  • Hi Martina,

    Hope U R ok,

for info I tool the steps in http://www.networksteve.com/exchange/topic.php?TopicId=26559

completely remove the Exchange 2010 by removing all relevant CN's & OU's in the ADSI and forced a replication across the domain.

as the lastwellknownobject thingy came back to me etc

I am about to start afresh again.

    cheers,

    Bina

  • Hi Martina,

    REJOICE--REJOICE...cant believe it myself yet!

Upon reattempting, I just deleted all MS related CN's and OU's from the ESDI as I said in the previous post and ran the setup again. As expected in the readiness it came back saying it will run the setup with prepareAD. This was the only warning.

The setup ran and completed all the Roles and I now have a fully installed and functional Exchaneg2010.

Am now taking a full serve backup just in case. I haver already downloaded the RU3.Sure the DVD in in fact Exchange 2010 (SP1) anyway so I suppose I will just be needing the RU's.

Ok, mate I have honestly lost count of how many bears I owe you. You have been absolutely instrumental in helping me out here. I take my hat off to your paitience and professionalism mate and one day I wish I can buy you ATLEAST one (better 10) bear :-)

    Cheers mate,

    Bina
