Proactive Backup
-
15. februar 2007 18:23It's nice that WHS includes a scheduled backup as well as a way to (from the clients) initiate a backup whenever you want, but some other packages (like EMC Retrospect) have a proactive backup module. After a client misses some (configurable) number of backups, usually because it is turned off during backup time, the software just watches for the machine to come back up on the network and when it sees it, it will initiate a backup at that time (it prompts to make sure you want it to happen first). It would be great to have this feature. Wake on LAN is nice if it works for you but if you have a wireless laptop or something, it sounds like that might not be the case.

WHS will warn you if you are past due with the backup - both on the box which is late (as soon as someone logs on) and on console (immediately when the threshold is over - currently "yellow warning" threshold is 2 days, "red" is 10 days).
Seeing this, you can start backup by one click (eight from the client or from console). But WHS will not do automatic backups outside of the defined maintanance window (by default in the night).
It would be rude for us to do automatic backups at random times... backup may slow your box down pretty significantly.

17. februar 2007 02:07Will the threshold points be configurable? It would also be nice if there was a similar threshold for the size of data growth -- ie less than 1% grpwth no warning, 1% growth would be yellow, 2% or more would be red.
The thinking here is if a one page document is created in Word and lost without a backup then it is no big deal. If you made major changes to your system you really should make a new backup.
If this idea could be implemented it would be nice to also move it down to the folder level on the client. This way you could monitor for significant growth in important, user-defined, data folders. -

After living with it for another few days I see your point and it makes sense. It would be nice, however, if you could dictate backup frequency or warning frequency. At present, I get warnings on my laptop if my desktop isn't backed up on any given night - seems like a little overagressive on the warning side of things.
