Bug: WHS Re-issues Ignored Errors

Frage Bug: WHS Re-issues Ignored Errors

  • Montag, 25. Juni 2007 17:01

Description: If a system has been turned off for a prolonged period, WHS Console will re-issue warnings about antivirus and antispyware, forcing users to constantly go back to WHS Console and re-ignore the same errors.

Consider a typical family, where they may have an older PC that doesn't get used daily, and may be powered off for a few days at a time... those WHS errors become very annoying.

Expected Result: Once an error about the state of antivirus and antispyware is ignored, it should remain ignored, even if the duration of the error continues.

Actual Results: WHS Console re-issues these alerts as new problems daily, causing the user to have to open up WHS Console every day and turn the off.

Since this doesn't seem to be a TALQ-tracking issue, I didn't post TALQ numbers, but feel free to ask for them and I will post them.

On the PC's where you don't want this shown, right-click the Green/Red Connector icon and untick 'Display Network Health Notifications'.

I don't think that solves the problem though. I do want to see new health notifications, but not for issues I've already set to ignore.

Turning off Display Network Health Notifications on all client PCs then means I won't see new problems that I wasn't aware of. The proper bug fix would be for WHS to ensure that when an issue is ignored, it remains set to ignore.

It looks like WHS may be doing this by design.

Here's what appears to be happening:

    • WHS detects AV out of date.
    • You tell WHS that you don't want to be notified about this particular problem any more.
    • AV software updates itself. WHS is notified and clears the Health notification.
    • You shut down computer and ignore for a few days (or weeks).
    • Start up computer.
    • AV software is once again out of date (different update from previous time).
    • WHS sends you a notice about this.
    • Repeat....

If WHS did not tell you about this, you may not be aware that a certain computer on your network is at risk again...

How about if you just allow notifications on one computer, so at least you only get bothered about it at one location?

That's not what's happening in my home.

    • I update the PC with the latest antivirus and antispyware.
    • I turn the PC off.
    • After 2-3 days, WHS starts displaying critical alerts saying the antivirus and antispyware are out of date.
    • I set those errors to ignore.
    • The next day, those errors are prompted again, as if I never set them to ignore.

If I turned the PC on, I could understand the errors being re-issued, the PC should have at that time downloaded the updates. Problem is, the PC stayed off, so the errors should remain ignored.

This is going to be a huge problem if not fixed by RTM... imagine the complaints from normal people who take their laptops off-network for a week and have to go to WHS Console every single day to ignore those errors... or choose to suppress all errors which leaves them at risk. Choosing to "accept the constant nagging errors at just one PC" is not something I would see acceptable for RTM, as this is a glaring bug.

This is as bad as a UAC bug in Vista constantly requesting Allow for an action/app-event which was already permitted (a huge problem in the betas).

This issue still seems to exist. I have a virtual machine hardly ever used and really don't want to see this warning all the time, but I want the backup. There an MS rep that can tell me why you haven't addressed this issue?

Ignore should mean DON'T BOTHER ME IT ISN'T AN ISSUE!

Waiting for the non-response I usually get from MS!

Still no Microsoft representation. Not to surprised. At any rate:

I've found a KB that is supposed to fix this, KB981089, and it has a prerequisite for KB979453. Of course neither show up as installed on my machine and I can't seem to get them from MS Update like I'm supposed to!

Great support here guys! ABSOLUTELY top noch!

    NOT!

This is unsupported as it requires a Remote Desktop Connection, but may get you the KB updates you require.

    1.  Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs
    2.  Scroll down until you find Windows Search 4.0 (should be the last item in the list)
    3.  Uninstall Windows Search 4.0
    4.  Reboot
    5.  Use the WHS Console.
    6.  Go to Settings/General and ensure automatic updates is checked "on"
    7.  Click Update Now
    7.  You should now have Power Pack 3 re-offered
    8.  Install PP3 and reboot
    9.  Keep repeating (Update Now/Reboot) until no further updates are offered

If the above does not work, I would recommend a Server Reinstallation

    http://usingwindowshomeserver.com/2009/05/31/how-to-perform-a-server-reinstallation-of-windows-home-server/

or if you prefer a quasi-official MS thread

    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whsfaq/thread/7a323a25-01d6-4f89-91d7-01474f0a19b5

Or do your own search for Server Reinstallation
