Sync 3rd party data with CRM 4.0

  How do I connect to CRM and create/amend entities - from a .NET assembly.

   

  All of the plugin examples I have found  have methods with CRM data passed to them, I want to start with nothing and build up entites, or fetch an entity from CRM using some unique data, amend it, and write it back to CRM.

   

  Can someone point me in the right direction?
