Money has stopped working

I receive error: Money has stopped working when I try to backup. A
search found kb942485 which suggests changing DEP settings. Article is
for Vista, won't let me make changes running Windows 7 Ultimate.
Money Plus Deluxe has run fine until last few days, problem started after
installing newest updates, including Live Essentials 2011. System
Restore is out, too many changes since updates were installed.
Running Money Plus Deluxe Sunset version on Windows 7
Ultimate 64 bit.
Update, this is the error message from Event Viewer:
Faulting module name: MSVCR80.dll, version: 8.0.50727.4927, time
stamp: 0x4a2752ffFaulting module path:
C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4927_none_d08a205e442db5b5\MSVCR80.dllAfter a suggestion from Cal Learner through money newsgroup, the reinstall didn't help, but I had already uninstalled and done a clean
reinstall.Thanks,
Dick Lewis

Since the problem only occurs when you do a backup, here are a couple things to try.
In Tools->Settings->BackupSettings, change the SaveIn field for your each-time backup to a file in your Documents folder. Do tick to ask before backing up.
For the SaveIn field for the scheduled backup, change that to a flash drive that you have plugged into the computer. Use the Browse button to make sure you don't make a typo in the folder path.

Thanks Cal, but that work around didn't work. I don't use the second option, I back up to thumb drivers manually.
Still seems to be something amiss with the MSVCR80.dll.
Thanks again,

Tuesday, 26 October 2010 2:46 AMModeratorThat's the Visual Studio C Runtime v. 8. While it's possible that Money exercises a flaw in the standard Microsoft runtime, it seems far more likely that Money is asking it to do something it's not supposed to ask it to do. It's a cause and effect problem. Like when a car is smashed head on into a tree--probably not likely that a problem with the car's grille led to the visible outcome.

Thanks Dick, but I had no problem until the newest Windows updates. Money works fine, I just can't do File|Backup,
nor choose Backup now when I exit Money Plus Deluxe. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redist is installed,
as is Visual C++ 2008 x64 and x86. Definitely at a loss.
Thanks again,

Tuesday, 26 October 2010 12:23 PMModeratorWell, I'm not having problems here on up-to-date Win7 x64 with the retail M+Dlx and have done both forms of backup in the past week. Have you considered a system restore to a prior restore point if only just to test the theory?
-
Tuesday, 26 October 2010 1:19 PM
Thanks Dick, but System Restore is too far back to test. I did do a complete uninstall of Visual C++ 2005 and Windows Live Essentials 2011.
Rebooting and Money backed up fine. Did a reinstall of Live Essentials, but not Visual C++ 2005 and of course the problem returned with
the same error message listed earlier. Something that Live Essentials calls for that must be creating the problem.

Update, Money Plus Deluxe is working fine, backing up with no problem. Unfortunately I had to completely
uninstall Windows Live Essentials 2011 to get it to work correctly. Windows Update now suggests update for
Windows Live Essentials and Windows Live Esssentials 2011. No damn way am I reinstalling the 2011 version
unitl there is a KB that Knows why it screws up Money Plus Deluxe Sunset Edition.
A big thanks to Cal Learner & Dick Watson for their excellent input.
When I get a little more ambitious, I'll reinstall the older version of Essentials, since I had it installed before
with no problems. This is a brand new computer (home built) , only 30+ days old, so I can do a little more testing.
Thanks again to all for your input,

Totally sucks, after working great all day, still getting same errors!
Total bummer! Gonna reinstall Essentials 2011 and trash the piece
of ____ Money Plus Deluxe, only used it since 1996.
Sheesh,

Thanks Dick! Opened and backed up 3 times to Desktop and that works. Get dates that way: My Money Backup_2010-11-08_072932.mbf. So why doesn't it like the directory that I want to save it in? Very confusing to say the least. Unfortunately it quit working after 5 times. Thanks again,

Did the directory that you want[ed] to save your backup in exist in the new computer?
Also, you don't want to have your *.mny, *.mbf, or other data files written within the ProgramFiles directory.

Of course, always used F:\Money Plus for all backups. Almost never install anything in Program Files directory. Do custom installs to Programs\software name or just in software name directory. What is weird is that it backed up to Desktop fine until the 5th time, now closes when I hit backup, but it does actually backup to F:\Money Plus, just complains that Money has stopped working.
And now I am more confused,

Hmmm. Suppose inTools->Settings->BackupSettings
suppose you set up to do these:x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]. It is best to Browse to
a location rather than typing the path.
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files.... I wonder if your error message would only occur after the 21st backup. Money Plus deletes the oldest backup matching the pattern once there are the specifed number of such backups already there when you make the backup. Since the default number is 4, Money did not try to delete an earlier backup until the fifth try.

Already have backup set as you describe, except that I have it set for 5. Just tested by browsing to Desktop again, it actually backed up, but still complained that Money had stopped working. Number of backups doesn't seem to be the problem. Thanks again. -

Count the number of matching *.mbf files to see if the process is indeed honoring the number and is successfully deleting the oldest file.
Also, consider changing the root name of the backup and changing the number to 10. See if you then get another 10 non-error backups.
You can set the number as high as 99.

Had to run a few tests first. Backup file name nor directory makes any difference. Actually backs up, but always complains that Money has stopped working. All seems to be from the call to MSVCR80.dll.Faulting application path: D:\Programs\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles\msmoney.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4927_none_d08a205e442db5b5\MSVCR80.dll
Cannot find a thing in the Registry Editor that would point directly to this. Cannot find a specific Service either.
Dick, really appreciate all the ideas, but something is really out of whack, I'll keep plugging away,

I don't know how Money decides which copy of msvcr80.dll gets used. Here are the copies on my computer. I see that one of my directories matches the one in your error message. The time and dates could be of use.... or not.

which no longer worked after a BIOS update. Thanks to Dick Watson & Cal Learner for some great input.
