    Hi,

The best practice to help make sure that actual work is populated correctly throughout Project Server 2010 is to use single entry mode and have resources only enter actual work through the Timesheet view.

To turn on single entry mode:

    1. On the Quick Launch, in the Settings section, click Server Settings.

    2. On the Server Settings page, in the Time and Task Management section, click Timesheet Settings and Defaults.

    3. In the Single Entry Mode section, select the Single Entry Mode check box.

now when you are using single entry mode, it may be in your best interests to hide the Tasks view completely so that resources can only enter actual work by using the Timesheet view. When both views are available, users can enter actual work in either view, and the data is persisted in both views.

    does this help?

if i select single entry mode and unselect "only allow tasks updates view tasks and timesheet" .

every employee has timesheet manager and project has project manager.

when team members enter hours in timesheet . where the hours will go for approval . to timesheet manager or project manager . and which one will approve to get in project plan. ?

    Hi Basim!

Tasks go to project manager (PM) for aprroving. When PM approves the project plan updates (after republishing)

In addition to Khurram said you may read "Best practices for submitting and reporting on actual work (Project Server 2010)" at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh694531.aspx .

    basim,

i have got your point, if you want your users timesheet to be approved by their timesheet manager, then you have to define the timesheet manager for every user.

for this go to: PWA -> server settings -> manage users -> open user profile, and under the timesheet manager section selec the resource timesheet manager.

now when he will fill his timesheet it will go for appoval to his timesheet manager.

    does this help?

when tasks will approve directly by project manager then what is the purpose of timesheet manager in project server 2010.

or we need to specify timesheet manager for team members or not ?

yes as i have replied earlier, you need to define timesheet manager for every user to get the timesheet approved from their line manager.

later you user have to submit the project task for their project manager approval.

when we are using single entry mode and hide tasks page then we have no option to send tasks to PM

and there is no line manager involve . only the person which publish tasks from project professional to team member .

and team member enter hours in timesheet and submit the timesheet to PM. which the PM will approve and hours will update into Project Plan.

what is the role of Timesheet manager or line manager in this scenario. ?

    Hello Basim,

Task View is used only to track status of project tasks (to get project status) whereas timesheet view is used to track time spent by individuals in an organization(against projects and non projects, for billing etc.). For ease of use and uniformity of data, Single Entry Mode in timesheet is used. This enables team member to log project related hours, for both status reporting of tasks and time reporting for organization form the timesheet itself, and also the non project (administrative kind, trainings, R&D etc.) of work for time reporting in organization. If you are using single entry mode, then as soon as you submit the timesheet, the project tasks go to project manager by default for approval (resulting in task status reporting), and the complete timesheet (Both project tasks and administrative tasks) goes to the respective timesheet manager enabling him to keep a track of how you are spending your time in office. If your organization does not want to keep a track of non project hours, then: i) You can actually do away with the timesheets and use only the tasks view, ii) Set the team member as his own timesheet manager (which is the default setting). With this he will be able to fill timesheets and no line manager approval will be required, but project tasks would still need to be approved by the PM.
