    I was just admitted to the program, and am about to buy a new system to install it on. 

    My plan was to get a bare bones system with no drives at all (I have three 250GB drive just waiting for a project like this) and install it from an external DVD plugged into a USB port.

    However, I was told WHS will not install if any kind of USB drive is even plugged in at setup time.

    So, will my plan work, or will I have to buy a DVD player just to install WHS?

    Just looked through the documentation and yes - the USB DVD drive is supported as long as your computer can boot from USB devices.  Also, make sure it's USB 2.0 ... USB 1.1 will be unbearably slow.

    I used a usb dvd drive and it worked fine.
