Windows XP "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting"

    Question

  • Our computer crashed and Windows had to be re-installed. After installing right-to-left languages (by copying and pasting a file from another computer) we started getting this message: "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This version of Windows did not pass genuine Windows validation." We tried reactivating it but couldn't because Windows is already activated.

  • The installed Key is a VOlume License Key, which has been blocked either because the owner no longer needed it, or becuase it was discovered to have leaked to the internet - in your case there are 663000 hits in Google, so it's the latter.

If the COA sticker on the case is for XP Pro,

Use the Product Key Update Tool - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/help/genuine/product-key to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker, then reboot and  post a new MGADiag report so we can confirm that everything went OK
