How to modify the timescale on the Timeline view in MSP 2010

I created Timeline's for some projects using MSP 2010. Some Tinelines display quarters and others display months. I can't find an option to change the Timeline timescale. I tried switching the timescale onthe Gantt view but it had no effect on the Timeline view.
Is there a direct or indirect way to change the timescale units on the Tineline view time scale?

The alter to density of the Timescale view - click inside the view then click on the slider in the lower right corner to change it.

In addition to Ellen's answer, you can also use the 'Zoom' and 'Entire Project' buttons on the View tab or use Ctrl+scroll to control the timescale of the Timeline.

Friday, 6 July, 2012 10:57 AMThe actions described zoom in and out on the timeline, but they don't change the time labeling. As the OP said, "Some Timelines display quarters and others display months". In the Gantt view, I can change the timescale to specify that I want labels in (eg) Years along the top of the view. On the Timeline, I seem to be stuck with whatever Project decides. Is there a way to specify the timescale labels on the Timeline?

Click in the Timeline view and the ribbon bar for Timeline will be activated. On the left side you should see Date Format. Use this to select the date format you would like to view.
As i adjust the timescale using the zoom in the lower right corner it seems to be adjusting the date density. Keep in mind that this view will also adjust to the density necessary to show the entire project in the view. When you click on the View tab (ribbon) you can use the option for the entire project. Note that the Timescale options are not available.
I suggest for the best use of this view to use it at a high level. What I recommend is to show summary and milestone taaks only.
