SBS has Exchange, I would like to see WHS also have exchange.  Even if it is only 10 mailboxes and cannot receive internet mail directly (maybe only through a smart-host), it would be awesome to be able to share contact lists with my family and share calendars.

While a mail server is a popular request for WHS, Microsoft has said that they will not be adding Exchange to WHS. See the WHS team blog post here.

That is true, however their article does not address my reasons.  I'm not saying I want Exchange to handle my incomming email, I want the shared contacts and calendars.  Having email stored on the server would be nice from a backup and web-access standpoint, but contacts and calendars are the main things I want it for.

    I agree,

I looked at WHS, but I am currently running a 2k3R2 installation with Ex2k7 just so I can share files and have a common email storage. Therefore, it doesn't matter which machine I log in to, I have all my emails. The contacts is another great advantage - no emailing contacts to my wife so she can send an email to a relative... calendars the same.

I would love to have a Home Mail Server -- as mentioned - enough to have a few accounts that will collect email via POP3 and be configured as a single outgoing connection (via smart host) so the set up of Outlook or Windows Live Mail is simplified!

    Cheers

I would like to see this, but accept that it would be fair to pay for it as an add on (say 50% price of WHS?)

However I think there is a concern that small business users would see this as a cheap solution for them and I can't see Microsoft not likeing that.

I believe both Kerio and Ipswitch are interested in providing functions for WHS. However, they have both said that it certainly wouldn't be in the near term and would depend on the probable market.

    Hi all
Just thought I would add my 2p to this and say I would love a simple version of exchange for my whs. I mean nothing as grand as exchange all we want is contacts callander and email that works well with outlook as a front end.

I have an OTS email server running on my WHS without issues for about a year now. There are lots of mail servers that can run, some free some cost.

I am using Ability Mail Server by Code-Crafters, it has the capability to configure pop3 downloads from various mail services (assuming you have that option in your provider. Most charge for that). It also has a web interface which is why I use it so that I can access all of my mail from anywhere - I have multiple accounts. My family can also setup their mail accounts to do regular retreivals from their own external mail accounts - this also helps to cut down on the spam I get.  Their setup tutorial was very helpful as well.

The only issue I ran into is with my dynamic ip address and not being allowed by some mail servers. I had to subscribe to a relay service to overcome this issue.

    works great!
