HELP - Counterfeit copy of Windows?

    Question

  • Background info:

My mother purchased a computer through an acquaintance of a friend, who I understand rebuilds systems as a side job.  She's had it for about 8 months, and tells me that from about 2 months ago she started getting a pop-up window, warning her that Windows was not genuine, and that her comp may be running a counterfeit copy.  She had ignored the pop-up's, till yesterday someone phoned her saying they were from the "Windows Service Centre" to warn her that her computer may crash if her system wasn't validated.  She was reluctant to deal with the person on the phone or give out details without first knowing they were legit, and being a tech-noob myself, I feel the same way.  Could someone please shed a bit of light on the problem, and let me know what next to do?  And is it normal for Microsoft Tech Support to phone despite NOT having contacted them at all??

  •   Carey is correct, this is a Non-genuine copy of Windows.  But I just wanted to provide additional information on how/why we made that determination.

The Product Key being used in your copy of Windows 7 is a Key that was originally issues to Lenovo. The Key became leaked to the internet before Windows 7 was released. Microsoft and Lenovo noticed the leaked quickly enough that Lenovo was able to pull that key from all their PCs that were using it.  Meaning this Product Key was never sold nor included with any PCs that were sold to the public.

    Thank you,

  • Microsoft never makes telephone calls to individuals unless that individual contacts Microsoft first.  There is no such legitmate entity known as "Windows Service Centre" as it is indeed a scam operation that should be completely ignored.

However, the installed copy of Windows 7 Ultimate edition is a non-genuine, pirated copy.  So is the installed copy of Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003.

You'll need to purchase a genuine "Full Version" edition of Windows 7 and perform a "clean install".  You'll also need to purchase a genuine version of Microsoft Office.  Genuine Microsoft software can be acquired from the Microsoft Store.
