Question

• I have had this computer for 4 years and never saw this. I got on anyway by clicking "Activate Later."

Every "Help" forum I see suggests re-typing the Product key. The sticker on my computer has a 20-character series of 5 letters and then 15 numbers without dashes or breaks.

When I retype this, on the second character (a letter) it stops because the field says "invalid character"- it wants a number when my product has letters.

In the system when i go to Start. Computer. System Properties. It also says I need to activate and has a Product ID number with numbers and letters (5 numbers-3 letters-7 numbers-5 numbers)- but that does not work either. I have no idea what Product key to use since both seem invalid now or my computer will not allow me to type the correct one....

Help!!!!

Because my computer is over 3, I cannot even ask questions over the phone. Every number asks for my service code which then hangs up on me for being not covered....

Licensing Data-->
C:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs(2000, 5) Microsoft VBScript runtime error: Object required: 'g_objWMIService'

Thanks, Ryan

IF we're lucky, we may be able to repair this - EVERY file affected by the Software Licensing service is showing as being mismatched - which either means that you've deleted the WinSxS folder, or that your Licensing Store is broken.
If it's the former, then there is no way back, and you will need to do a System Recovery from the manufacturer's recovery disks or partition.
If it's the latter, then we *may* be able to get things working again (BACK UP YOUR DATA NOW to an external drive)
Let's try and recreate the Licensing Store - and hope we don't need the COA Key....
Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files. This may resolve the issue.

1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Softwar eLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
Reboot TWICE
If necessary, then you may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. (check again for a COA sticker!)

Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

• Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool link does not work. I tried right-clicking to "open in new tab"- a microsoft tab begins to come up and load, then disappears...I will try typing it as a search...
Thanks, Ryan

• yeah great- this comes up when i try to run the diagnostic:

Genuine validation is required for Windows Vista

You need to validate Windows on your computer before you can enable certain features and get all optional updates, downloads, and special offers from Microsoft. For more information, go to Genuine Windows Help and How-to.

Thanks, Ryan

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

This must be some glitch because that link will not work- either as a cut and paste or as a link or as a right-click open in new tab

i dont understand this at all- it begins to go to a microsoft page then disappears.

why will it not let me go to the microsoft page at all. if i do it manually it crashes the window

Thanks, Ryan

• link does not work, carey- cannot get to the page any way- as link or copy paste or as open in new tab.

every message i get seems to be something others are getting.

i just read that support for vista is gone july 12, 2011. is this some kind of microsoft locked in glitch to make people buy new computers every few years?

i have never had this come up. why would my key code not work in the first place? how could it magically change?

Thanks, Ryan

• Open System Restore by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking System Restore.‍ Select a Restore Point that was created prior ro your problem becoming known.

• everything says "None"- i know every time i tried creating a restore because of my fear of things llike this, it would say "it cannot be created for the following reasons. The shadow copy provider had an error."

This still does not answer why I cannot find my Product key?!! without having to go to a site that will not work.

I apologize Carey if this sounds like angry, but I am completely frustrated that my product key number could change (what is it for if it can change so easily?) and there is no way to find out what it is without going to a website that wont appear because of the very issue its supposed to help with.

I cannot diagnose without validation or get re-validated without a disgnosis????

Thanks, Ryan

• when i first got this computer in august or 07 i had many problems. it took several days, and a replacement computer before they were resolved. this does not explain why the sticker on the computer does not work now after 4 years. why the number in the system properties is a different number i do not know- i never needed to know this stuff until today. the dell number on the cd case is probably for something else. i am NOT a technician.

i am a customer who is being given links instead of answers.

These forums are 'staffed' in the main by volunteers - they are for peer-to-peer support. If you want one-one support direct from MS, you can try the WGA Support - which you may have to pay for.

Please do the following.

Open Internet Properties
On the Security tab, click 'Reset all zones to default level' and Apply
On the Connections tab, click on LAN settings - Make a note of any Proxy server settings then UNcheck the 'Use a proxy...' box, and OK
On the Advanced tab, click on 'Restore Advanced settings' and click OK
What Security software are you running? (Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-malware, etc)
Temporarily disable any third-party firewall, and then try the MGADiag link again....
what EXACTLY happens when you click on the link?

At the moment, I can't actually download the MGADiag - it may be that the server is down for some reason

...looks like there is a problem with the servers, as my download stalled at 160KB on two different computers
I've pinged MS to see what they have to say - hopefully they'll get it sorted :)

Great - persistence paid off :)
For some reason, the Software Licensing Service is not running.

Please check that the Software Licensing service is set to startup type Automatic.

Click on Start
in the Search box, type
SERVICES.MSC
and hit the Enter key
Accept the UAC prompt that comes up
In the listing of Services, find the Software Licensing Service (SLSVC)
right-click on it, and select Properties.
make sure that the service Startup type is set to Automatic - click Apply if you've had to change anything.

Then try starting the service.
What is the result?

If you get an error message, please report back with the EXACT details.

If it succeeds, reboot - run an new MGADiag report, and post it back here

• i was in safe mode when i resigned on. for whatever reasons, firefox wont work except in safe, however that was probably why i was able to run it. when i did the SERVICES it was already in "Automatic" but i did it again and tried starting but it wouldnt do it in Safe mode. so i re-signed on in regular mode (only Internet explorer works now, firefox says its already running even though i closed it out properly) and did it again - Services, properties, automatic apply restart.

now it seems to be taking forever to run the diagnostic and i am wondering if i need to go back into safe mode...but the fact that it was in "automatic" already makes me leary that this was the problem....?

Wait a while :)
Being in safe mode would explain why the SLSVC wasn't running at the time - although I'd have expected a different error message in that case.
If the MGADiag report doesn't complete, cancel it (use Task Manager) and check and see whether the Service is actually running properly...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window (click on Start, in the Search box type CMD, and wait for the file to be found - right-click on it and select Run as Administrator. Approve the UAC prompt if you get one).
At the prompt, type

SC QC SLSVC
hit the Enter key and wait for the response

do the same for
SC QUERYEX SLSVC
SC SDSHOW SLSVC
SC QPRIVS SLSVC
SC QSIDTYPE SLSVC

Copy the results to your response here. ( click on the little icon in the top left of the Command Prompt windows - select Edit, then 'Select all' - then hit the Enter key, and Paste the result into Notepad or your response) - do not close the window yet.

then run the following command to try and repair any damaged files
SFC /SCANNOW
Once complete, close the window, and reboot
run another MGADiag report, and post the result.

• i turned everything off and looked at the bottom of my desktop tower. i couldnt see anything besides model number and dates and tech info. i realized that a sticker i put on top of the computer tower at the back may have had a coa underneath it but i am unsure. when i peeled it off it just made a mess...i see when i finally ran the diagnostic- the link worked in safe mode to download the MGAdia- that the code is in that except the first 10 digits...are X'd out, the other 15 are visible. isn't there anyway to get the computer to reveal its own code like that??????
Thanks, Ryan

Licensing Data-->

In theory, it's in the state in which it will remain until you either make the current install valid, or install with a new version of Windows.
