Windows 7 Build 7601 Copy is Not Genuine

    Question

  • Hi there

I have been using my PC since September and was purchased legitamately from a PC shop with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit pre-installed.  Today it suddenly says its not genuine any more.  I have tried inputting the CD key again, but it says its blocked, and I tried to validate it on the automated phone system, and it said it was blocked there too.  Please help!  And can you use idiot proof instructions if you can, I'm not that savvy!

    Lots of thanks, Shel

I have copied and pasted the diagnostics below as requested.

  • Your Product ID line shows that you are using an MSDN product key.  Unless you are the subscriber who was issued this product key, it is invalid for your use.

    Windows Product ID: 00371-221-3568904-86162

The 221 is the MSDN indicator.  The shop that sold you this copy of Windows sold you a counterfeit product and you need to talk to them.  Many counterfeit copies are being sold on eBay and the Amazon Marketplace as well as various websites around the world.  It is possible that the shop ordered stock from one of these sellers.

The product key is not a genuine retail PK.  It is a genuine MSDN product key and so activated and passed as genuine until it was blocked by Microsoft as an MSDN key in use by a nonsubscriber.  It takes a while for MS to detect and complete processing of abused keys.  Pursue a refund from the shop immediately.  Do not accept a replacement product key from them.  It will likely be from the same source.

Buy a copy of Windows from a rock solid seller like the Microsoft Store or Amazon Corp (not an affiliate).

  • Oh thats a surprise to say the least I would have thought a shop would have had genuine copies installed, and I can't go back to the shop that sold me it, as they went into liquidation earlier this month.  Oh well, I guess thats money down the drain then :o( and I got laid off work a couple of weeks ago so not a chance of buying a genuine one either.  Pah, bloody computers!  Thanks for the answer though, at least now I know.

Quite possibly one of the reasons that they went into liquidation was that MS got the 'powers that be' onto them - see if there's a way to claim that you're a creditor, by reason of fraud.

  • The Licensing Data section of the Diagnostic Report isn't showing correct information. This usually indicates that Windows 7's Licensing Store may be corrupt or unreadable. Try the below steps to recreate the Store.

    1) Open an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start sppsvc
    10) Type: slui.exe
    11) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automaticly.

How long have you been having problems? - I ask because you're showing a Trusted Store Tamper dated February 2011, which should have caused a non-genuine notification then. Was this what caused your call to MS support?

    What Anti-Virus are you using?
