Vista Ultimate, not genuine?

    Question

  • I was activate and running fine, now all of the sudden when I run Windows Update, I am told "this copy of windows is not genuine".

This is a system my company built to try Vista out.  No hardware has been changed since install and the license is only on one machine.

    the software box is geuine.

    Thoughts/ideas?  i submitted a case (SRZ070224000210).

    thanks :)

  • Can you tell me what error you get when you validate (Click "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine)?  It'll be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on the validation failure page.  Thanks!

  • Can you tell me if you updated any drivers before this happened?  Thanks!
    Saturday, February 24, 2007 2:24 AM
  • Several days ago, this issue started today, I had to downgrade my Nvidia display adapter from a beta to the January release.  I was trying to get sli going, but the system became unstable under the beta driver.  Please don't tell me this will happen after every driver change.  if so, is there a limit?
    Saturday, February 24, 2007 2:48 AM
  • No, no.. this should not happen with every driver change.  Thanks for following up!

  • I have this same problem.  In my case it was a bit different.  I installed from the OEM kit for a computer created for a client.  The hard drive started to fail, so I copied to another hard drive.  Turns out that it was a bad power supply, so when that drive failed I installed yet another drive which now runs fine.  Well, it runs fine except for Windows Vista Ultimate now saying it is not a genuine copy.  The Computer/Properties thing says it is activated, but when I try to validate it says it needs to be activated before it can be validated!  I'm sure it is because the system thinks I changed computers, but I didn't.  I changed hard drives and a video card that also got fried.  I also tried to open a support ticket on this both on 2/22 and 2/23 and received no email responses yet.  I'm hoping maybe the forums will work faster.  Below is the output of the diag tool

  • Please try what Largeleon did in this thread and phone activate (run slui 4 in command prompt to get the process started).  Then revalidate and reboot.  Let me know if that works.  Thanks!
    Sunday, February 25, 2007 12:55 AM
  • OK, I did the activation by phone (this is the 2nd time I did that), and after reboot it still said it was an invalid copy of windows (not surprising).  When it popped up the window that said the Aero interface could not be used, I clicked on the link to resolve the problem.  That validated just fine.  But even after a refresh my screen said it was not a genuine copy of windows.  So, I rebooted again, and now everything appears to work just fine.  Aero is working again, and I can get updates again.

So the sequence was (just to make sure everything is clean):

    1. Reboot
    2. Run slui 4 from the command line and activate over the phone
    3. Reboot
    4. Validate (I used the link from one of the warning boxes saying things were disabled)
    5. Reboot

Thanks for the help - on a weekend even!  I really appreciate it.

  • Hi,

I've the same problem as described here, but unfortunately none of the steps could have helped me.

I ran slui 4, reactivated (it was already activated) via phone, called the hotline which lead me to the genuine/diag tool and i tried wga check again - nothing.

    It still says 0xC004C4A6.
I even wrote a mail in the support area which left unreplied since 2007-04-05

It's my third week without aero, without non-critical updates now.

Any further suggestions to solve this problem?

  • Hi JS1968,

Have you already tried phone activating?

    Thanks

  • Thanks for your help Mr. Hartman. That actually worked out Smile

    (insert rant about vista here)

  • Yes, everything runs again. But where the problem for the error lies?

  • Hi JS1968,

Do I understand correctly that you validated successfully?

    Friday, April 13, 2007 5:38 PM
  • Same damn thing, I bought a GENUINE copy of Windows Vista Home Premium OEM version and bought an anytime license from WINDOWS MARKETPLACE, so I assume it SHOULD be genuine right?! Activated and everything went fine but going through the validation page, IE freezes for a while then just junps to the Do it again page! Third reinstall and third time I'm getting this problem, We are the people who actually buy genuine and we end up having those kind of problems?!?! So the best way microsoft found to fight piracy is to screw up with people who PAY for the software?!?! So $@%%$@ frustrating!?!

I had a problem simular to yours. I did not hasve a lot of information on my computer so i just reinstalled it. I recomend thet you calll them.

Another thing you should try is to look under your laptop (the underside), There should be a sticker with the key. Try using that key to activate.Good luck.

  • As i wrote above, i still have the same problem.
The support is playing pingpong with me.

I called the hotline first which said I have to write an email - now they closed the ticket and say that I have to contact the support via phone.

    I'm not amused....

So is there really no solution for this problem? "Glad" to hear that I'm not the only person with this problem. What can I do - send Vista back to MS and get an XP license?

    Regards
    Martin

  • Hello,

I also experiencing the not genuine error.

My PC is a DELL from Feb 07 with pre-installed Vista Ultimate. The problem appeared on 04/12/07 most likely when a new WGA tool was automatically installed (Windows Update). Using system recovery to the point of last Thursday solves temporarly the problem but only until the next reboot.

I am also very angry about it, I payed for my license, I really thinking of getting a hacked license to get rid of this.

  • Hi Martin,

I think because the ticket is closed I can't get access to the information you have in the first service request you filed.  If you open a free service request by visiting: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860& and post your confirmation number here, I can contact you directly so we can figure out the cause of your issue.  I promise I'll e-mail you ask quickly as I can.  Thank you!

  • Hi callx,

Can you tell me what error code you see on the validation failure page?  It will be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on that page.  It'll look something like this [0x8000C000].  Thank you

  • I know what you mean, I've been on the phone with them and they've been transferring me  back and forth to the same teams everytime.. then a lady in the end actually admitted that there's no phone support for vista yet because it's so "new" and the only way to get help would be to email support.. Funny eh? They release Vista without having actually had proper support ready for it.. Talk about a "wow" experience.. lol.. and I paid money for that..

  • Hi callx,

Please try phone activating and speak with a customer service representative when you're given the option. You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4" in the search field in the Start Menu and pressing Enter.

Once you've activated, reboot and revalidated here: www.microsoft.com/genuine

    Thanks!

  • Hi Martin,

I wasn't able to retreive your case information using that number.  Did you go through this link: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860 ?   The number I was expecting is a ten digit confirmation number that you should see when you get to the last page of the service request process.  Something like this: 1034687519.

  • Hi,

yes - i used your link and got a german language page with a button "Email Anfrage starten"
    (Start Email Request).

The Support request has the ID SRZ070417001375 (I got no other ID while requesting).
Now a support person named Anthony Roberts answered and said that due to the amount of emails they where not able to answer my first request and ask for patience, some time they will process my request.

Funny that you can't look into the request. Maybe another support system? Maybe you have no access to the requests for germany?

    Regards Martin

  • Hi Martin,

Thanks for sticking with me.  I've asked Anthony to forward me your contact information.  I'll get in touch with you as soon as he does that.  Thanks again!

  • i'm having the same issue.

I talked with Jill, Ryan, Kristy, Kevin Wilson, and Michelle at alot of different numbers. They bounced me back and forth between many different departments. Every single one of them told me that they weren't able to help me, but that they were confident that the person they were connecting me with WAS the person who could help me.

I cannot get into control panel. It pops up a box and disappears quickly. I cannot get into my computer properties.

When i load certain third party software, or when i open windows or pretty much whenever i do anything, a popup says something about windows aero not working, or it says that this copy of windows is not genuine. There is a notice on the bottom right corner of my screen saying Windows Vista (TM) Build 6000 This copy of Windows is not genuine.

I spent over 2 hours either on hold or explaining my situation to all of the people I listed above. There were actually 2 or 3 more names that I didn't get down because I didn't realize I would have to make a list.

Kevin Wilson seemed to genuinely try to help me and was at a loss for what he could do more. He was one of the supervisors I asked to talk to.

Everyone else was quick to say that they couldn't help me but they were sure that the next person was.

Michelle offered to connect me with someone who could help, but told me that it would cost 59 dollars. I told her that I refused to pay extra to have the software fixed and that I expected to have it fixed tonight. She informed me that there were no supervisors on the property and that she was the only person left in the building. (something about her accent suggested to me that she was about 12 hours different in time zone than I was.) After I told her that I wasn't satisfied and that I expected her to find a supervisor, she said "OK i will get a supervisor for you. I was put on hold for about 2 minutes and then someone picked up, said something that sounded like some sort of foreign profanity, and hung up on me.

I'm honestly considering never ever using microsoft software ever again.

When I spent thousands of dollars on something, I expect it to work. If I have to pay Apple twice as much for a stable OS, I suppose I might as well switch.

If I don't get the help I need before monday, I will be returning this laptop to Hewlett Packard and I'll make the official switch to Mac.

Furthermore, my intentions are to express my concern to the better business bureau if the situation isn't resolved promptly.

Is there anything that anyone at Microsoft can do to help me, or should I expect the same level of care that I have already received?

My email address is fighter.rice@gmail.com .  I will post this message in several places and I expect to be contacted shortly.
