Cannot access Shared Folders, not prompted for credentials

    Question

  • When I try to access \\SERVER\Software (or any other shared folder) from one of my client PCs, I get:

    "Network Error

    Windows cannot access \\SERVER\Software

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

    Error code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found"

This client PC was joined to a domain after the WHS connector was installed, which seems to interfere with Shared Folder access; but previously I'd be prompted for credentials and after entering them could connect fine. I'm no longer being prompted for credentials on this client PC.

I can still establish a Remote Desktop Connection to SERVER from this client PC, as well as connecting via the WHS Console. But from this client PC, in the WHS Console's "Shared Folders" tab, if I select a folder and click Open, I get:

    "Windows Home Server Console
    "
    \\SERVER\Software"
The network pat was not found"

Other client PCs access Shared Folders without a problem, from Windows Explorer or the WHS Console's Shared Folders tab, so I know networking and file sharing is working. The problem seems to be specific to the problem client PC.

When I run the Connector Troubleshooter (from the WHS Toolkit) in Advanced mode on this client PC, I see a failure on [5.6] Check SMB read permissions. The "Explain" details are:

"Reading files of SMB path \\SERVER\Software failed with exception The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help."

I know from experience that the network troubleshooting from Windows Help can't solve anything except the most basic problems, so haven't wasted time on that.

Any suggestions for how to get this client PC back to prompting me for credentials, and accessing Shared Folders again?

    Thanks!

  • Peter,

You could do worse than starting by running 'discovery.exe' from the Windows Home Server folder in Program Files of the Client. This will search the network for your server, and if possible, re-establish the connections.

Next, if that doesn't work, run 'ipconfig /all' from the duff Client and a working Client and check the differences between them - if any.

If you then post them, I'm sure there will be more info forthcoming.

  • Ran Discovery.exe, "Joining Windows Home Server" succeeded but "Configuring computer backup" failed; it took a good 30 seconds for the "Configuring computer backup" to decide it had failed. (This client PC was successfully backed up last night...)

    I re-ran Discovery.exe, same result.

Unfortunately running the WHS Console from this client PC no longer connects properly, the console tries to connect for a while then displays a mutated version of the console's login screen that doesn't include any UI elements (no text box for the password, no buttons), just a blue screen (not THAT blue screen) with the WHS logo at the bottom right corner. Same story with Remote Desktop Connection, I get exactly the same funky screen, so RDP doesn't work either :-(

I ran ipconfig /all on this client PC and another that could successfully connect to Shared Folders, here's what I got for this client PC, which is having problems: (I've masked employer-specific domain info, should be irrelevant)
