Windows activation problems

    Question

  • I purchased this HP laptop from Circuit City on April 15, 2007.  Since then, I've had it in repair shops 3 times, (first to replace/repair LCD, last 2 times for hard drive replacement).  I've called 3 or 4 times to re-activate the Vista windows because I keep receiving the Invalid Product Code message.

    Just called today and was given a new 48 digit activation code number.  The machine tells me this is an invalid number.  Please assist me in getting this machine validated once-and-for-all.  The following is the newest error message I received;

    Hi Ssanders1,

From your Diagnostic report, it appears that you just need to activate.

I have also looked up your Product Key and our records shows that you activated successfully on Oct 14th. When I say "activated successfully ", I mean that the activation attempt was successfull on our side and should have been successfull on your side.

In this situation, there are only 2 reason, that I know of, why the activation would not be successfull on your side:

    1) If you gave the Activation Rep the Installation ID, but then closed the Phone Activation Wizard window, then reopened Phone Activation Wizard window and entered the Confirmation ID that the Activation Rep gave you.

    or

    2) You mis-typed the Confirmation ID.

My suggestion is to Activate by Phone again, and enter the Confirmation ID into the Phone Activation Wizard, while you are still on the phone with the Activation Rep. Make sure you read back the number to confirm you entered it correctly (it's a long number and mistakes can happen) If you still have problems, the Activation Rep should be able to provide assistance.

    I hope this helps!

    Thank you,

    Hi jkinney,

Here are the steps to Activate by Phone:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.

    Thank you,

  • I am having a problem with Windows Activation as well. I have a Toshiba Notebook PC, A135-S4467, and I had to do an 'Upgrade Repair Installation' using my Anytime Upgrade Disk that came with the computer, and now it will not let me activate properly.

I have heard of other that had this problem, and that there was a Microsoft patch that took care of this problem, but I honestly cannot find it. If I have heard wrong, I would really like a way to activate my computer, even if it is calling in to Microsoft, that they are not going to tell me "Use your Toshiba Restore Disks" and basically blow away my computer, because that is what they do when they restore my machine - just format the entire drive and re-install everything, which I cannot do with all the important stuff on my computer and no external way of backing all of it up save DVD disks, which are not good for the files that I have to change on a VERY regular basis, almost every day.
