Windows XP Home OEM key (Acer Incorporated) not valid for SP3, but is valid for SP2 and older

    Question

  • I am trying to reinstall XP Home onto a Acer laptop of mine.  The laptop did not come with a install CD so I had borrowed a friend's XP Home OEM CD and attempted to use the key on the CoA stuck at the base of the laptop. I slipstreamed SP3 onto install files and made a bootable CD.  The CD with SP3 will not accept the key on the CoA, but SP2 slipstreamed will.  Have Microsoft blacklisted some OEM keys?

  • Hello JLamy,

Thank you for visiting our forum today :-). The problem you are experiencing is with your friends OEM CD. There are different versions of say XP Home such as OEM XP, Retail, OEM System Builder and OEM SLP. The later is what manufacturers use to install from the factory. In turn the product keys are tied to each respective versions. Your best option JLamy is to contact Acer Technical Support and request them to send you the actual recovery media for the model of system you own.  You may contact Acer at:

Since the telephone number and websites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.  Take care and thank you again.
