This copy of windows Vista is not genuine

    Question

  • I have a two year old PC and about a month ago a message appeared saying that my copy of Windows Vista was not genuine.
I contacted Microsoft Customer Support. Using remote control, they found that my computer was unstable and they were unable to fix it. In order to solve the problem, they very kindly sent me, by snail mail, a complimentary new operating system of Vista.
It would require a clea...n installation. Before performing a clean installation of Windows Vista, I needed to backup all my data (186 gigabytes). A clean installation of Vista will mean erasing all data and starting from scratch. Using Microsoft Customer Support, it was installed by the another very pleasant Indian chap again using remote control of my computer.
Last week a message appeared saying that my new copy of Windows Vista was not genuine. Don't forget that Microsoft sent me this copy.
I contacted MCS again, told them my story, A very nice Indian chap, remote control, an hour later, informs me that it may not have been installed correctly and before he could hand me over to a qualified technician to repeat the clean installation I would have to enter into a service agreement costing $160 odd dollars.
I asked for a supervisor ...."all in a meeting....blah blah blah."
"I am very sorry Sir but is there anything else I can help you with?"
I thought of a few things. Can you?

  • Censor out the last 10 digits from that last serial code that you posted fully. Do it now! Or you risk it being abused and used by someone else.

That maybe browsing this forum. NEVER post your full product key on the forum.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

In that case you’re either misreading the Key from the label  - or the label is not for Vista Home Premium.
What EXACTLY does it say on the COA label? – but do NOT post you product Key, or it’s likely to be stolen.

  • Aloha Noel,

I change the product key code to the COA label. When I get to the activation page it informs me that "the product key that you typed is already in use.  Everytime I go back to entering a new product key I see that the existing one shown is not the one I entered. The COA label reads "Windows Vista(TM) Home Premium OEMAct"

That’s quite normal – you need to activate by phone
    telephone activation.
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.

  • Aloha Noel & Associates,

Thank you so much for your help. Activation is successful although it didn't happen the way you described. The SLUI4 couldn't be found.I notice that the product key code in system properties is not the number on the COA label. Should that be a concern?

    Great!

    1) there’s a space between SLUI and 4 – which is why when you typed SLUI4 Windows couldn’t find it :)

    2) Each OEM_manufactured machine comes with two Keys – the OEM’s Key which they use when installing the OS at the factory, and your very own COA Key for use in cases such as yours, when the security on the OEM Key system breaks down.

    Hope that helps?

    Good Luck!

  •  I have the same sort of problem.  My 4 year old Toshiba laptop with Vista just started saying i do not have a genuine copy of Windows. I ran the diagnostic and got the report below.  I tried to re-enter the product key from the System tab but it says teh key will not work with this version of Vista and to reun Vista setup or ener the proper code.  I have done this twice.

    Any suggestions???

  • Forgot to add:  on the System page it says click on this to activate Windows.  When I do it says I must be re-installed to activate.

  • I have the same problem.  I have a message in the lower right corner of the Vista desktop that says the software is not genuine.  Yet, it is -- I bought it in an ugly plastic box with a Microsoft sticker and everything on it.  If I run the diagnostic tool, it says the software is genuine:

Please repost your problem with the MGADiag report to your OWN NEW thread – this ensures that it gets the best attention, and reduces confusion for all.

Having said that, the only indication of any problem in your report is that your installation of Office is non-genuine, being based on a Blocked Volume License Key.

  • I was getting the same message about 16 days ago, it kept telling me to activate windows vista- but when I entered the product key undrneath the laptop on the MS sticker, it said that it was not correct. Yesterday, I turned on my laptop, attempted to install itunes, the message came up in the lower right side of screen that my copy of vista was not genuine, after trying to restart once or twice, the laptop gives me message that windows is has not been activated in time and then the laptop shuts down. what can I do?
