Is there a reason the "Proposed Answer" button has disappeared when posting an answer? I noticed this 07/10/08...

That depends. You can only propose an answer if your logged in and I've noticed that sometimes the server times out your connection. Another reason is you're not responding to a question but a different type of post.

I'd still recommend you posrt the issue to the bug report forum to make sure if its a real issue someone will see it.

There was a new version of the forums released today, version 3.4, which may be causing some unknown issues. Details of the release can be found at:
    http://forums.technet.microsoft.com/en-US/announce/thread/c3adc734-dfa6-4b04-8467-6c1c89169a58
    which included
"Proposed Answer Updates – Proposed answers are more clearly differentiated from the true answer."

If you continue to have problems please post the details in
    bugs

One of the side effects of which is that you can no longer propose your own post as athe answer to the question.  I could understand why this change is made, ostensibly to enhance the role of PEER review.
