MCP, MCTS, MCDBA, MCSA, MCSE, MCITP, MCPD, MCT - I know what is your worry .everything will be ok ,if you take up firmly what you choose .and study hard for it .
Because you once were a programmer ,have some experience in .net work ,you can consider about microsoft .net 2.0 cert below:
MCTS: .NET Framework 2.0 Web Applications Exam 70-536 and Exam 70-528
MCTS: .NET Framework 2.0 Windows Applications Exam 70-536 and Exam 70-526
in my opinion ,MCTS will promise you a good salary or a good career .
when you get MCTS .net 2.0 ,you can upgrade your MCTS 2.0 to MCPD .Besides ,it will cost you much money to take classrom training or other training courses ,you can consider about self-study .there are a lot of resources on the internet to help you study .
During your cert preparation ,you can get some advice or some information from those experiencing them to help you .
if you have other questions .please let me know .

- Hi,
wow.. its an honour to write to a question posted by a person of your calibre.
if i were you, i would learn and go towards the MCSE/MCITP tracks. the reason being you are 53 (no offense) and if you start programming now, you will be starting all over again which will require you to spend more time and hardwork towards it. Rathr than doing this, you can easily use your past exposure and experience, capitalise on that and certify on the MCSE/MCITP path, which will be easier for you and when you go into the job market it will make sense.
said that, it will be beneficial if you can learn some basic programming too. which again is important.
