I am getting "an unexpected error occured, please try again later" message today when trying to sync manually. The last scheduled sync on 10/4 went though(10/5 sync failed, but I think Microsoft sent an email saying it would be down?) and I have been using MyPhone for several months with no problems. I have not gotten the upgrade instructions, that's why I tried to sync manually. Any ideas?

Can you exit My Phone through the menu, then wait about 15 seconds, then delete appdata.dat and config.dat from \Application Data\Microsoft\My Phone?  After that reopen the My Phone app and try to sync again.

    Hi Trailblazzzer,

Could you try and synchronize Microsoft My Phone again?  Some user data was still being migrated from the previous version to the current version when you posted this message.  If you're still having trouble after you attempt to synchronize again, please let us know!

    Hi Trailblazzzer,

You might want to go to the http://myphone.microsoft.com and down load the new version (1.5) and install it on your phone.  During installation of the new version, you will be prompted to first uninstall the 1.1 version of the product before the new version can be installed.  Don't worry about doing this as all your data is stored up on the internet!  You should not lose any data.

Let me know if this solution does not work and we'll try and find another one for you!

    Good luck!

Is your phone tethered to your pc while you attempt to sync? I would always get that error message when I leave the phone charging overnight through the usb port

Having the same problem with my HTC xv6800 from Verizon.  Once the steps above were done, it would ask me to accept and sign in again but couldn't connect with the service; I removed the program and attempted to reload/reinstall it, but once I login to the myphone site, it won't go any farther.

Active sync with Google works great so I'll just chalk it up to another half-baked Microsoft idea.

Could the problem be that some of the features for certain phones that are not being able to back up? I have had this message since the upgrade. I have tried the following:

    - Unistalled it completely and installed the new version from scratch
    - Deleted two files from the My Phone folder appdata and config extentions. (It took me to the reapplication section)
    - Resynced after completely exiting from my task list.

I finally tried to unmark some of the radio boxes on the list of sync options and it let me back up the items checked (i.e. contacts and calender) After trouble shooting each marked boxes on the program it worked but when I went back and checked the text messaging button it froze up and I had to do a soft reset. After it was done resetting I tried it again and then gave me same the error again (Error 0x85010001). I am guessing that there might be an issue with backing up text messages, but then again I didn't write this application so what do I know. I really would like to thank all you people that are posting your problems. I almost gave up hope with microsoft. Thanks...

I have found that going to the task manager on my phone, and ending all applications improves the chances of a successful sync.

Same here, I have to close all open apps to get it to sync, most of the time that works. More often than none I have to do a soft reset then sync. This sucks because it doesnt sync during the schedule overnight that I set up. I hope I never lose my phone and have to use the premium features to find it etc because it will not sync and give me the last known location : /

The last known location might not do you much good anyway. You would need to set it up so that it would give you the current location if you want to want to find it when it's lost or stolen.

last known location would be nightly when it syncs...  unforutnately my POS Sprint HTC Mogul doesnt keep more than a days charge, so Im sure it would be on long after I were to "lose it".

No. Where do you find \Application Data\Microsoft\My Phone?
Click start, and choose file explorer-then choose my device in the top left drop down. Then choose the Application Data folder, then the Microsoft folder and finally the My Phone folder. Scroll down until you see the 2 you are looking for and simply highlight and delete these files.

I've tried all that you suggested & like Mr. Ali below after seeing the Sync Fail once it got to syncing text messages I went to the options to disable syncing text messages & enabled just about everything else & then the sync completed successfully. Is there a reason why text messages won't sync & causes an error message to appear?
