Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP1 upgrade

Sunday, July 12, 2009 1:20 PMI'd like to upgrade my Laptop currently with Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 with Service Pack 1 without slowing the machine down. I've setup Windows update and eventually it updates to SP2. After an update the machine is so slow. This is from a new installation where the machine was very fast, opening Office packages virtually within seconds. After the upgrade the machine is absolutely useless. All I need is the SP2 for my version of OS. How do I confirm the correct update and only the SP2 update?
