Lost COA Sticker, and Windows Activation Problems.

    Question

  • Hello, and thanks for any help you can provide,

I have an OEM copy of XP that I purchased years ago, and I'm wanting to install XP on my Vista Premium machine but I have a slight problem.

I moved almost a year ago, and I lost my COA sticker, though I do have my CD Key Written down on my XP Install CD, but the problem is, it won't let me activate it because it says that I've activated XP too many times and I believe it said I would have to call Microsoft about it. But I didn't even bother because I don't have my COA sticker so I can't prove that it's mine, however I registered Windows to my email address months before I lost it.

Is there any way I would be able to activate it or do I just need to buy another copy of XP?

  • Jeremybp,

The product key is the most important piece of verification a person can have. Phone support should be able to tell what kind of key it is and should be able to let you know the licensing rules that apply too. I'd try phone activation again. Here is some information which may assist you in that.

Just an fyi, since your issue is related to Product Activation, I need to remind you that the purpose of this forum is the support of the Windows Genuine Advantage program and your question falls out of the scope for our support. In an attempt to assist, provided is information in regards to using the “Activate by Phone” method from the activation Wizard. Telephone numbers for Activation Centers vary by product license and country/region. Use the number provided on your Activation Wizard screen to call the Microsoft Activation Center.  Please follow the below guidance for telephone activation for activating Windows.

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.

Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.

    2.

Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3.

Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.

    4.

Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

    5.

When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.

You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

After you finish the above steps please restart the computer and try to validate Windows again: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine. Please locate the “Validate Windows” button in the upper right hand corner. Double click on the button and follow the guidance. Were you able to pass Windows Validation successfully? Please post again if you need further assistance. Thank you.

I believe your options outside of phone activation are limited at the point you are at.

    Respectfully,
