Cant Log on to Windows Home Server from Internet

    Question

  • I had a fully functioning system with WHS and four computers.  I was able to log on from the Internet through the WHS Web site that I had set up using the "log on" tab in the upper right corner.

I replaced my router with an Apple Extreme, and THOUGHT I had kept all settings.  NO settings changes have been made on the server computer.  I can access the server from ALL network computers, just not from the internet itself.

What port do I need to open to enable remote logon from OUTSIDE the network?  Are there any other changes to the router that I need to be aware of?

The web site for the WHS works fine including file downloads from the web site, I just can't log on.  I get this error:

    Windows cannot display page.

    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Steve,

For remote access to your web site from the Internet, it's just the standard port 80(http), and port 443(https).
For connection through to your Clients, the port is 3389.

There is a technical brief for Remote Access available here.

  • I am sure those ports are open.  I just need access to the File sharing screens.  I will read the tech brief.  I can't imagine what else is happening.  This new router, though VERY powerful, has been driving me nuts.  Apple seems to do everything their way.

  • Steve,

Have a read through this as well, it's a setup guide for the Extreme and WHS.

    Good luck,

    Colin
