File Mismatch activate error

    Question

  • I bought a new computer from interconnection in Seattle. They get donated/seized pcs, fix and sell, some seized for piracy reloaded with genuine windows as in this case:

It was running vista business x32. I have a download of iso from windows academic  and the product id.

after copy w7 to dvd, startup was able to load w7 but not activate:

    1. is the system still reading pirate product key?

    2. Since I cannot upgrade 32 to 64 bit, I chose a clean install - is there a better way?/

    Thanks,

    Holly

Your installation is showing as using the Default (Keyless Install ) Key.
The motherboard on this machine is a Retail one - and there is some kind of attempt to simulate a Vista SLIC table.
Since all MSDNAA Keys are Upgrades, and whatever COA Key may be present on the machine is invalidated by the change in motherboard (unless perhaps, it's a System Builder COA sticker), the MSDNAA install is probably technically invalid - even if you manage to activate it using your MSDNAA Key.
You will need to purchase a Full Retail license for the machine, and install and activate it - then use your MSDNAA disk and Key to upgrade that (or, obviously, just purchase a Full Retail Win 7 Pro)

  • I don't believe MSDNAA Windows is Upgrade only (I am not completely sure of this but was not able to find any documentation that said it was)

Since your Windows is currently using the default Keyless Install key (A keyless install key is automatically used during install when no valid product key is entered during the install process) the normal resolution would be for you to enter the Product Key (that came with the software) by clicking the Start button, right-click on Computer then select Properties. In the window that opens click the Change Product key button and follow the directions.

However, if the Product key is not accepted, then the error message you get may be able to tell us what the problem is (maybe the Product Key is for Upgrade only or maybe some other issue) So if the key is not accepted, make sure you tell us the complete error message.

Also, here is the link to the MSDNAA Student Resource page that may help in using the MSDNAA software correctly. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/academic/dd759402
