Forum 3 Update (Release 3.3), is live!
- Our next update to Microsoft Forums, Release 3, will go live next week. You’ll notice we’ve added a few improvements you’ve asked for, like search within a forum, sign-in prompt on reply/start new thread, thread preview enhancements, as well as a number of bug fixes.
What you won’t notice right away is the work we’ve done to enable migration of forums from the current platform (http://forums.microsoft.com/) to the new one. Starting soon after 3.3 is live, we’ll begin migrating the first set of forums, including forum threads, user profiles, and recognition points, all on a per forum basis. That means when forums you’ve participated in on the old platform come over, the only thing you’ll have to do is add alerts for any threads you were tracking. The first set of forums migrating will be…
MSDN
.Net Development
Visual Basic
Visual C#
Visual C++
Visual Studio
TechNet
Forefront
Windows Server 2008
Announcements about what to expect have been posted in each of these forums. When migration begins, another announcement will be posted letting users know that the forum will be locked temporarily to new posts. As soon as the migration is complete, a final post will be made (notifying RSS subscribers of the new location), and then all forum/thread urls will point to their new location on Forums 3.
If you have any questions or concerns, post your feedback in the suggestions forum.
Thanks
-Andrew

So, Andrew ... why is it that the Alerts for the threads we are tracking can't be migrated over also? That sure seems like a lot of work for us to manually add Alerts ... especially for some of the guys who post to a lot of threads!!
Oh, also, I notice that the Alerts check-box isn't automatically checked when I reply to a thread ... it's set up that way in the old forums (or is it a user-setting? even so, mine is set that way in the old forums).

Hi Bonnie,
You can set the alerts checkbox to be checked by default each time you reply, there's an option for this under "My Profile". This was something people complained about on the current forums, so we made it an option on the new platform.
We did consider migrating alerts, but decided against it, based on the time required to do it and that there was a fairly easy work around. As each forum moves over to the new platform, you can go to "My Threads" and pick the threads from there you want to continue to track with alerts.
Also, another feature we've added in the new platform is the "Unread" filter (requires being logged in). If you go to "My Threads" and filter on "Unread", you can see a view of every thread you've contributed to, which has posts you haven't read yet. This is another good way to keep up on the activity in the threads you care about. If you have lots of threads you were tracking with alerts, and don't want to go back and set them all manually, you might try this in the meantime.

Forums Product Planner, Andrew.Brenner at Microsoft.com- OK, cool Andrew. Thanks. I didn't realize that when a forum was moved over, that the threads under "My Threads" would show up as well. That's ok, I can live with manually having to add Alerts for those threads I guess. The "Unread" filter is a good idea too.
Another thing though ... I was pretty sure that for my last post to you, I checked the Alert Me checkbox and I never got an email when you replied. Maybe I didn't check it, but I was pretty sure I did.
I definitely did for this post though, so please reply to me so I can see if I get an email. Thanks!
~~Bonnie [C# MVP] - This update is live on the site now. If you don't receive an alert, definitely post to the bugs forum.
Thanks!
