OC 2007 R2 Requirements
-
Friday, October 16, 2009 10:07 PMI was speaking to an MS rep who said that OC 2007 does not require OCS and I have attended several MS events where OC is discussed and OCS is not mentioned. Sooooo I took a look at several MS OC sites and I can not find a backend requirement list. The best I found was:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6306ae9c-6ede-4908-800f-256a75bebc75&displaylang=en
"Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 is required to enable the full functionality of Office Communicator 2007."
Which does seem to indicate that OCS is NOT required for basic functions.
The customer I would like to use OC 2007 R2 at has:
Exchange 2007 SP2 WITHOUT UM
Office Pro+ (which includes OC 2007)
and all they want is basic IM functionality and tracking. What can OC do WITHOUT OCS?
Further, I understand that Exchange 2010 has some IM functions out of the box. Will OC 2007 R2 function with Exchange 2010 WITHOUT OCS?
Thanks in advance.

Ian,
I'm not sure what the context of those discussion were, but in order to utilize ANY functionality with Office Communicator you must first have an OCS server deployment for clients to sign-in to and communicate with. Without first deploying OCS the OC client is useless. Exchange 2010 will also not support OC clients directly for any IM functionality.

Monday, October 19, 2009 2:38 PMThanks. For the update. You might want to have someone adjust the text of:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6306ae9c-6ede-4908-800f-256a75bebc75&displaylang=en
"Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 is required to enable the full functionality of Office Communicator 2007."
Will OCS 2010 be coming out soon?
