Hi, I have a double question here. I have a Desktop & I have a Laptop computer. The Laptop uses Vista Home Premium while the Desktop uses Vista Business. When I run the Windows Compatible Test, the Desktop tells me I am only compatible to upgrade to Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise. While the Laptop tells me I can only upgrade to Home Premium or Ultimate.

What I'd like to know is, why can't I upgrade the Desktop from Vista Business to Windows 7 Home Premium?

Ideally, what I want to do is buy ONE version with TWO Licenses so I can just upgrade both computers. But, the only version that they both agree with is the Ultimate and I really do not want the Ultimate Version.

So, can I just buy Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for both computers?

I forgot both my Windows Live Password and the Hint Answer. Tried to sign in and was advised password reset instructions had been sent by email. Can't sign in to read the reset instructions.

I created an alternate Windows Live Account, but would like to be able to use the original account. Can anyone please help?

Strange NTFS permission inheritance problem

Hi there,

I have a top level folder named 'Files' that has NTFS permissions configured as follows:

- Creator Owner: Full Control (Subfolders and files only)
- Domain Admins: Full Control (This folder, subfolders and files)
- Backup Admin: Modify (This folder, subfolders and files)
- System: Full Control (This folder, subfolders and files)

Now, I have a subfolder within the 'Files' folder, named 'Backups' which is inheriting the above permissions fine. Within the 'Backups' folder I have another folder called 'Month One' and then within that folders called 'Week One', 'Week Two', 'Week Three' and 'Week Four'. The 'Month One' folder is inheriting the permissions but the Weekly folders are inheriting the permissions as shown below:

- Backup Admin: Full Control (This folder only - inherited from C:\Files)
- Creator Owner: Full Control (Subfolders and files only - inherited from C:\Files)
- Domain Admins: Full Control (This folder, subfolders and files - inherited from C:\Files)
- Backup Admin: Modify (Subfolders and files only - inherited from C:\Files)
- System: Full Control (This folder, subfolders and files - inherited from C:\Files)

My question is: Why is an additional NTFS permission being shown in the ACL for the Weekly folders and displayed as being inherited from the same folder, when the parent folder that the permissions are being inherited from is not configured to allow the Backup Admin Full Control?? I've tried removing ACLs, resetting permissions, etc but the additional NTFS permission in the child Weekly folder keeps returning!

Does anyone have any ideas?

Why does'nt Firefox work anymore

I just installed the Windows Live Suite of programs through my windows update in Vista, Now my Firefox 3.5 will not connect to the internet. Google chrome and IE7 connect without a problem, mozilla keeps saying "problem loading page". I have swapped homepages, and the URL makes no difference, it still comes up "problem loading page". I also installed SP 2 for Vista just before installing the "live" suite of products. I have checked my firewalls, and many other areas of the computer to make sure Firefox3.5 is good to go and I cannot find a reason why it will not connect, can anyone offer a new suggestion or solution? MAPS Outlook with BCM

We are trying to install this on several machines but always get the "Outlook is not installed" error. How do we get around this? Our goal is to install Outlook only. We don't care that BCM comes with it as we won't be using it for this environment however no matter what machine we try to put it on we can't get it to work. It always ends with the same error on install.

A couple of day ago I could not get my avatar to change. I tried many more times, and now yippee!, it worked. Also used a different route to add profile info, and it worked too. Thanks to Maverick81 for responding. I sent a reply to your message last night, but now I can't find it in the thread. Oh. well, the problem's resolved now.

Start Menu No Recent Items

I have recently delete my recent items in the start menu accidently and when i open a program or a document, it doesn't come up on the start menu section on the left pane. When i got to recent items on the right pane, i can see a recently opened document.
I have already checked "Store and display a list of recently opened files" as well as "Store and display a list of recently opened programs.
What can i do to fix this problem?

My Network Places not working properly

For some unknown reason "My Network Places" on my laptop (XP Pro) is not now functioning. I can see icons, but they are the generic Windows icons - not the shared folders icon. When I click on any one of them it does not go to that networked place. I get an error message. I have never had this problem before. I can work around by going to "laptop" in "view workgroup computers", and then access the networked site, but that is a hassel. I would greatly appreciate insight on why this might be happening, and how to put "things" back to the correct, workable situation.

Additionally - I have been using AVG (free) for a couple of years, and have not had this problem. I recently installed nCleaner, and have used it for "cleaning" things up. I have additionally installed ii on my desktop, and have done the identical procedures on both computers. I do not have this problem on my desktop.

Recording problems with Vista

I have a new HP Laptop running Vista (fully updated). The PC has an Altec Lansing sound card.
My problem is that I can't seem to be able to record internet radio using any of the usual software eg Audacity, Mp3MyMP3, Screamer, etc. This is not a copyright issue since I can readily record the same radio program on my desktop.
On my laptop I can hear the radio, but when I run the recording software for say 20 seconds, the pattern of recorded waveform is flat, and when I go to playback all I get is silence. (In fact that is not 100% true, at the start of each recording I get <1 second of actual program but heavily distorted.)
The only other thing to mention is that when I look in the Vista Control Panel at the recording inputs available all I have is the microphone. No mention of line input.

I spoke to HP about this and their conclusion was that this was a Vista problem.

Can anyone help me. If it is a Vista problem when might it be fixed?

My dell started about a week ago to slow down...nothing i do speeds it up, defrag, reg cleaners etc....this morning I turn my machine on and this is what i get:

I've installed Works 9 on my PC where I previously had Works 4.5 installed. (Works 9 makes you delete all older versions of Works.) None of my old files that were in 4.5 will open now. I've had to uninstalled 9 and reinstall 4.5 to open the old files. Is there anny way I can get my old files to open using the works 9 version? I have Win XP Home. Thanx for any help!

So here's what I'm trying to do:
I'm an intern at a medium sized company. Right now they have me making phone calls. I was given two excel lists. The first list is a complete set of companies and their contact phone numbers (this list is about 5,000 lines long). The second workbook is a list of companies that I need to call (much smaller, about 50 lines long) but, this list doesn't have phone numbers. I've been switching back and forth between lists for every call. We have dozens of people making similar calls and all together we must be wasting an absurd amount of time. I'm hoping there's a way to have the smaller list of companies we need to call, extract the phone numbers from the larger list. Any help?

cant access files on another Hard disk

I recently bought another computer with windows xp sp3 and i already have a computer with winxp sp3 i took the hard drive out of my old comp and put it in as slave to the new one. i can open it from "my computer" i can get in the windows folder and open anything i want in there but when i try to get in "my Documents " on the old Hard drive it says G:\Documents and settings\user name\mydocuments is not accessable

I'm essentially trying to optimize an older machine - currently I am running installed on an old raid 5 controller across 4 disks.. This seems to be bottle necking my speeds - online and off. I have two sata drives on my mobo (ABIT VT7). I can see the drives in the (my computer >) manager, but I can't seem to install windows xp on one of them from the os running on the PCI raid 5. I know it's an older mobo and I should update (478 - P4 3.0) but I want to optimize this machine (more ram, less read/write, new install) for my wife before I build a new one for myself. :p Originally I used this machine as a server (hence the raid, suse enterprise 9) When I set it up as a desktop and bought xp pro I couldn't install on the SATA as I don't have a floppy to install the drivers. I was hoping to install the same version on the sata from the os running on the raid.. Guess you could call it a soft install, as I've already installed the drivers into the copy of the disc i made - but I don't have a cd burner either.. My only other option if I can't install from a running os (in a seperate window or something like a pseudo VOS maybe..?) would be using my friends machine for the moment; move my sata to his machine, install, put it back in my machine and booting from that install..

I've searched everywhere for something that would not be convoluted.

I have a primary 250 GB HD that my Vista OS is installed on. Additionally, I have two more 750 GB HD's configured in a RAID1 configuration, using the onboard Intel Matrix chipset. How do I recover or reconnect my RAID 1 data in case I have to reformat and rebuild my primary HD and OS?
