Error Synchronizing Records

We have a couple of salespeople on our CRM 3.0 environment with laptop computers. They have just started to have errors when synchronizing. When they are going offline, the sync process gives them the "Error Synchronizing Records" message and then displays:
"An unknown error occurred while sychronizing data to Outlook.
Exception from HRESULT: 0xAD520009"
They have been successfully synchronizing for months, so not sure what happened here........

I'd try the following:
1. Ensure that the CRM 3.0 environment has the latest updates:

2. On one of the users, disable all the local data rules and try to go offline again
Does this work?

We're checking on the updates, but in the meantime disabled all the local data rules. The process still ends in error.
Is there a document somewhere that fully explains how the local data rules operate?
