  • GanbitX,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • Rar123,

Your HP came with one of these two, and maybe both:

    1.  Manufacturer-supplied Recovery CDs/DVDs that will completely reinstall XP Media Center Edition onto your computer.

    2.  An installed Utility that will make a set of Recovery CDs/DVDs that you can use to completely reinstall XP Media Center onto your computer.

So, you already "have the CD."

If you lost it and need to replace it, please contact HP, or have a look at this page at HP:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1818343&lang=en&docname=bph07143

By the way, the mgadiag utility is reporting that the installation of Office XP Pro w/Front Page on the computer is Nongenuine (Office Status:  114 means Nongenuine).  If this comes as a surprise to you, please return to the place of purchase and demand that you be given the genuine software you paid for, or a refund.  In any case, please remove the nongenuine installation of Office from your computer.

  • Hello Stephen,

Sorry to hear about the hard drive failure as I myself know this all to well. The positive point is you were able to use chkdsk and repair the old drive. Now this may be used as a secondary drive for data backups once your system is operational again :-).  Lets discuss your particular situation. First I can see right away what problems you are encountering. The disc your friend lent you is Windows XP Pro and originally the system came pre-installed with Windows Home. XP Home product key will not activate XP Professional and vice versa. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA). Please always reference the EULA which accompanies your system.

Your best course of action is to contact emachine technical support as I recall eMachine purchased Packard Bell. Inquire what the cost is for a recovery/restoration media disc and order the appropriate recovery media for your model number. This disc will restore your computer back to factory settings. There are other options available also such as purchasing software directly from Microsoft @ http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/. Also please research the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA) for all the correct usage agreements. Please contact us if you have any further questions. Another alternative may be to visit eMachine Forums. Maybe you can search for replace a lost system restore disk.

I would highly recommend not using a friends operating system for a couple reasons. First this may violate the EULA.  Under NO circumstances should you try to download an ISO image for software from a P2P file sharing site, or use a second-hand burned copy of an XP CDROM.  These have been shown to be full of root kits, malware, viruses,  spyware, Trojans, and who knows what else---you'd be worse off than you are now. Why would you take the risk of using one of those?  Research has shown that about half of the software copies available on P2P download sites are infected with root kits, and who knows what else.

Thank you and hopefully this will provide you with information for resolving your problem.

  • I am having a similar problem. I recently turned on my PC to be confronted by the Blue Screen of Death! I established that my hard disk was in trouble and I went out and bought a new hard disk. Using a disk that a friend gave me I managed to install XP Pro onto the new hard disk but could not use my XP Home product key to validate the installation and therefore cannot download updates from microsoft. Meanwhile I ran check disk on my old hard drive and managed to get it back up and running and bootable. I then looked into how I can go about recovering XP Home with my valid product key as I want to install that on my new Hard Drive uncase my old hard disk is about to fail shortly. The machine is a Packard Bell and is supplied with software that gives you a once only opportunity to create Master CD's for system recovery and reinstallation.

    Now the really annoying bit.

I have never made the Master CD's and did not know previous to these problems that it was possible. But having launched the Packard Bell software to create the Master CD I found that the option was not there. I then remembered that when I bought the PC it was a unit that had been previously purchased by somebody who later returned it to the store. I bought that unit as it was the only one in the shop and was slightly discounted for having been out of its packaging. I can therefore only assume that the original purchaser of the unit made the Master CD and did not return it with the machine. This leaves me with no Master CD and no Windows XP CD. Having purchased the unit 2 years ago and only just discovering the problem, 'PC World' have been very unhelpful and are not willing to help me.

So my question is how do I get hold of a copy of Windows XP home that will work with my valid product key? And does it have to be an OEM version with the correct service pack level to match the product key? Or is it possible to reset the PB utility to let me create my own Master CD's?

  • ZZT,

Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide some information which may help. The easiest way to restore your Dell Dimension 9100 system back to factory settings is to use a recovery software disc. Please keep in mind that recovery CD’s are specific to your computer manufacturer. Contact Dell Technicial Support and order the recovery software media for your model system.  Next reference the technical support page on  how to use the recovery disc for restoring your system. They should be able to assist with your request and/or questions. Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.

I have included their contact information here for your convenience:  800- 624-9896

  • Hello 10-36,

Let’s split your thread off so we may focus more attention on your particular situation.  Splitting threads are done to mitigate confusion caused by more than one posting about similar   topics allowing us to focus on each customer individually.  Please post your question here http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=442&SiteID=25 in a new thread of your own.

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool.  The tool will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Also, please provide a brief synopsis describing the issue including any error messages or codes. These can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage Web pages when an error is encountered.

Also did you review the whole thread? There is a link here Carey provides which can answer your question.

    Thank you,

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool.  The tool will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Also, please provide a brief synopsis describing the issue including any error messages or codes. These can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage Web pages when an error is encountered.

Please download and run the MS Genuine Diagnostic Tool utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Leo,

    Thank you,

  • How to replace your lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/326246

    Friday, March 28, 2008 12:01 PM
  • Redda,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. I have extracted a portion of your diagnostic results to review with you:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2

Unfortunately, the product key used to install your Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer and/or the Office Suite and let them know it is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Reporting piracy will assist  in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs as illustrated here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/content.aspx?displaylang=en&pg=counterfeit

Sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Take care,

  • I lost my windows home xp re-installation CD and Im having problems with my windows installer. It will not allow me to run my quickbooks as I'm getting a code 1642 with that, also when I type a letter or even now as I type the cusor will jump around and I will end up typing in the middle of my existing sentence I just finsihed writing. This happens no matter how slow I type. I would like a new CD so I can re-install my windows home xp. I have my codes on the bottom of my laptop. What do I need to do to get a CD? Can I just re-download from online?

  • Sirknight,

We request all users initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool to try and identify the problem you may be experiencing.  Did you receive any error codes and/or statements whatsoever indicating a failed validation?  Please try validating windows again by visiting the following location:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine next click on the "Validate Windows" button in the upper right corner.  What happens?  The genuine site can also provide you with valuable information so please take time and review the documents.  Another site for helping customers identify genuine vs. non-genuine software is located here:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/

Next please download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.  This would assist us immensely so we may analyze possible causes for a failed validation.  Next we will begin formulating a resolution for what may be causing the problem.

    Thank you,

I have a dual boot system with Vista 64 and XP 32. Vista has been working well, but recently I've had to go back to XP and have had all sorts of problems with peripherals. USB drives, back up drives, camcorders, iAnythings just don't work. At the end of the hardware install it always fails saying "Data is invalid". I have also lost a large chunk of my disk space on my XP drive (100ish GB) and I'm not sure why. I figured I would just wipe that drive and start over buy I cannot find my XP Disk anywhere. I moved a little over a year ago and I don't think I've seen it since.  This was a retail version of XP Pro 32 bit. Computer was hand built and not OEM.

  • I have a similary problem with my Asus notebook.

For a long time I have had problems with it and now I decided to use my recoery cd, but when I get as far as to start the install I am being told that there is not enough free space?????

In MS dos it has a folder called I386 wich contains a hold lot of unreadeble signs and letters - properbly spyware etc. When I try to format I cant. What are my options? - I thought about getting a windows cd and starting all over with the pc, isn't that possily when I have my productkey.

    Hope somebody can help me....

    PLEASE!

  •  Hello,
I have run into the same issue. I built my sons computer 2 years ago for Christmas and installed Windows XP Home. I just bought him a new larger hard drive and can not find my CD.
What do I need to do?
