windows 8 store notification not appearing to install Windows 8.1

    Question

  • Hi ,

I have installed update and restarted my PC since yesterday. but still i waiting for the notifications to install preview. how i can install it ?

i have opened store many times and connected my live account to windows 8 and using WIFI.

Also anyone tell me if i installed preview on my genuine windows , what will happen if final release for 8.1 arrives. will it be able to convert there or not ?

Thank You , Shan Ali Khan

  • I get the notification. I click on it to take me to the store. The store loads up and then nothing happens.

I can uninstall and re install the update successfully but afterwards I get no prompt to enter the store.

The only way I can make the prompt appear is to do a system restore and install the update again.

of course the update never loads in the store so I can't install it anyway.

    So annoying.

Are you doing that as the machine owner?  It works for me (though uselessly as the other poster notes because I have W8 Pro from TechNet) but only when I am accessing the Store as the machine owner, not as a normal user.  Heh.  Now I am seeing the option at the Store and when I click on it:  "try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC".   YMMV.

I don't know.  In fact, I'm not certain what is going on.  You say you have "installed update", so I'm wondering if you saw the same thing that I saw as a normal user?  Right now my machine owner is in the process of downloading the 2 GB.  I can hover over the message and get a progress report.  FWIW I didn't have to search for the update.  When I went to the Store it was there being offered (without searching for it), so I clicked on the Download button and am just waiting for that to complete to see what happens next.   Wow.  It's done and awaiting restart.  Unattended it appears it would have booted in 15 minutes automatically.

Edit:  In fact, that 15 minutes turned out to be unconditional.  It looked as if the Close button would let me do anything else and then reboot manually but while I was musing about making another image (e.g. one which would have had the download in it), it restarted.

Another thing that I hadn't prepared for was getting an account verification number.  I am in W7 now picking that up (via E-mail option) and I'll have to see what I need to do with it when I try booting W8.1 for the first time.   ; )

Then I guess you had better try collaborating with others in this thread who are still seeing that symptom or wait for a response from someone who has access to the design spec's and source.  Otherwise my tack at this point would be using ProcMon to try to find out what diagnostics were being produced and what clues I could infer from those.  An additional benefit of running ProcMon would be that it will supplement the meaning of whatever diagnostics you do manage to find.

    Good luck

Are you telling us that we can go back to W8 from W8.1 after installing from Store?  If so, I might try doing that to get a better back up (e.g. before that 15 minutes timer takes over again. <eg>)

It should not. You can go back it's your not happy with Windows 8.1. Remember this is just a preview version not the final it's bound to have issues. Unless you are planning to test it then go for it.

Are you sure?  That's not what the FAQ implies.  In fact, this is why I was asking Shan about whether an uninstall was working after installing from the Store.  The FAQ does not make that clear IMO.  Otherwise, I think "going back" would entail using an image as close as possible to the time that you did the upgrade.  I don't even have an expectation of a Restore doing that.  That's why I had been "musing about" making an image when the 15 minute timeout made my decision moot.   ; )

Sorry, it's not in the FAQ it's a caveat in the download page:

If you decide that you want to install Windows 8.1 Preview using the ISO, you won't be able to uninstall it. If you decide to go back to your previous operating system, you'll need to reinstall it using the recovery or installation media that came with your PC, which is typically DVD media.

  • you should be able to select what you want to keep or not. Make a full system image before doing the upgrade so that you can restore Windows 8 if you run into issues.

Thanks for the tip about the iso Andre, I had forgotten about it and was just going to wait until the final release.

The Windows Store doesn't work for me and neither do the metro apps (or whatever they are called now).
