Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7601 This Copy of Windows is not Genuine

    Question

  • I have a laptop which suddenly, since January 1, 2013, has presented the "Build 7601: This Copy of Windows is not Genuine".  The product key on the label is no longer legible so I am assuming that I need to buy a new copy of Windows.  If I purchase a new Windows 7 Ultimate System Builder DVD will the product key for that Builder Pack work to validate my current Windows 7 Ultimate installation?

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.

Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.

You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

Yes - on purchase of a valid legal Full retail Key for Windows 7 Ultimate, you can simply swap the Key in - however, if you have a sufficiently good counterfeit, you may be able to get a complimentary license from MS - fill in the forms at..... http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/howtotell/default.aspx

  • The COA sticker is well worn and no longer legible.  I did replace the hard drive in this system several months ago and did a fesh install of Windows 7 Ultimate (purchased online).

  • Noel,

Thank you for your time and help.

    I found a remedy...I bought a Windows Validation Kit....less headaches, and now I know I am legal.

  • That works - the drawback with the GGOK license is that it dies with the motherboard onto which it is first installed.

    Good Luck with it!
