Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage suddenly not valid

    Question

  • I have been using the same software on my pc for years. I am now getting a message that my software is not validated. The only thing I can think of is that my motherboard crashed about a year ago, so I bought a new pc, and had the hard drive from the old machine transferred to the new machine. I still have the microsoft office frontpage 2003 disk, and product key for the above.

  • Hello Chalgravesteve,

Microsoft Office, as far as I remember, has always been its own program separate from the operating system.  Way back when, when computers were $3000-5000, manufacturers and retailers often included Office as part of the purchase price, but it was always a separate program.

With Office 2003 and now Office 2007, many manufacturers have preinstalled a limited use Trial of Office that expires after a certain number of days or a certain number of uses.  In order to continue to use the Office Trial at full functionality, you have to puchase a perpetual license.

You wrote, "I thought that the XP package included excel, word, powerpoint viewer, outlook express etc etc"  Windows XP does include the Outlook Express email program.  However many folks confuse Outlook Express with Outlook, which is a component of the vast majority of Microsoft Office suites.  Excel and Word are not include in any edition of Windows, they are cornerstone components of just about every version of Microsoft Office Suites.  The Powerpoint Viewer is a free download from Microsoft downloads.  The full Powerpoint Program is another one that is a component of almost every edition of the Microsoft Office Suites.

Here's a snippet of your mgadiag report:

Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage - 114 Blocked VLK 2

The report is telling us that you have Office XP Professional w/Front Page installed, and you have a separate installation of Front Page 2003.  Note that Front Page 2003 is showing as a Genuine retail license installation, which is exactly what we want to see--it's 100% genuine.

Regarding Office, the report says you have a Blocked VLK, which means that (a) your computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office XP Professional w/Front Page installed, and that (b) a Blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement.  (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.)  However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.

If you are an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing (VL) materials such as a VL CD, and you certainly should not have received a Blocked Product Key.  You should have been sold Genuine retail licensed software.

Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand either a full refund or to receive the genuine software you paid for.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you think that you qualify for the Genuine Office Offer, apply for the Offer thru the Learn More Online link that the OGA Notifier is displaying.

If your use of this Volume Licensing edition of Office XP Professional w/Front Page is in association with an organization that has a Volume Licensing Agreement, then please contact the IT support staff of the organization for further assistance.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

  • Hello Chalgravesteve,

If you do not need Outlook, then consider a local retail purchase of Office Home and Student 2007.  This edition has Word, Excel, PowerPoint and One Note.  The license allows you to install it on up to three computers in your household at the same time, and as a retail license it can be moved to other computers.

    1.  No Outlook (but you don't use it)
    2.  Only licensed for noncommerical use (IOW, you can't use it for commercial purposes, ie running a business)

You can uninstall the nongenuine Office and not disturb your current genuine installation of Front Page 2003, which will coexist nicely with a new installation of Office 2007 if you decide to purchase it.

  • From your MGA report:

Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage - 114 Blocked VLK 2
    Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 - 100 Genuine

Unfortunately, the installed copy of Microsoft XP Professional with FrontPage is non-genuine.  The software is a Volume License copy installed with a product key that the original owner reported to Microsoft as lost, stolen, or misused.  Consequently, the license (product key) has been blocked from further use. You can review your options by visiting Microsoft Genuine Advantage and clicking on Validate Office.  When validation fails, you will be presented with a Get Genuine button to click on.

  • I have no idea how/where it came from then. The original pc had windows xp preinstalled and that hard disk was swapped when the motherboard failed. I have always used excel spreadsheets and word, but use outlook express but not outlook. I dont use powerpoint except as viewer. I bought Frontpage as I needed it for my website...I had no idea that it may have already been on there!

Presumably the easiest and most straightforward way is to pay the £99 and download a new version? Is there no other way of getting the installed version validated?
