I  would suggest checking this thread out: http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=897109&SiteID=25

As well, if you go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click Validate Windows you'll get linked to a webpage with a KB article describing software compatibility problems with certain software in Vista that is causing your machine to go into a "Modified"/"Tampered" state.

  • but I am locked out of everything except for IE. I had an error like this about a month ago but when I validated online it went fine. I have none of the software installed that is on the list and I have not made any hardware changes. What can I do now?

I am also getting the 0xC004D401 error on validation page. Is there a utility that will scan your pc to let you know what exactly is causing the problem?

Do you have any programs that run automatically that may be made by:

    Gameguard?

    PC Tools?

    Trend Micro?

It looks like the issue (according to our diagnostics tool) occured at: August 15, 2007 11:51 AM your local time.

Did you install anything at this time?
