Windows 7 Validation error 0x8004fe22

    Question

  • I have been getting a message for about a week saying that my copy of Windows 7 is not genuine, and 0x8004fe22 is the error number in the message.  The Laptop that this is happening on (Purchased at Best Buy) came with Vista, and I purchased the Win7 Ultimate upgrade a little more than a year ago from the Microsoft website (no validation troubles upon installation), so pirated software is not an issue.  I have already system restored to a point well before this started happening, but to no avail.  AVG 2011 hasn't picked up anything on its scans, so I have no reason to believe some form of malware is responsible.  I tried sfc /scannow, and while it did find corrupt files, it "was unable to fix some of them"

OK that seems to have brought out the real problems :)

From the fact that the Tampered file slui.exe doesn't appear in the File Scan list, we can tell that the actual file itself is OK, but that either a reference to it in the registry is modified, or its permissions have been altered.

Unfortunately, I know of no-one in these forums who can assist in solving this (other than by getting you to reinstall Windows), so I suggest that you contact WGA Support for assistance. Hopefully they'll be able to get you sorted without having to reinstall.

    North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

    Outside North America:
    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0

Please let us know if MS manage to repair the problem without a repair install of the OS - it would be useful for future reference!

The 0x8004fe22 error indicates that Windows has attempted a self-heal process, and failed - unfortunately there seems to be no other indication of any problem in your report.
This leads me to think that possibly the Licensing Store is corrupted....
    Recreate the Licensing Store
        1) Click Start button.
        2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
        3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
        4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
        5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
        6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
        7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
        8) Type: net start sppsvc
        9) Type: slui.exe
        10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Run MGADiag again, and post the report

Noel, thanks for your quick reply (and on a holiday, at that).

I ran the commands you posted earlier, and here is the report MGADiag generated:

  • Noel:

I called MS and they actually gave me a new product key, and that didn't even work.

However, I ran the Win7 upgrade again, and that seems to have solved the problem.  I ran the validation on the MS website and it checked out.

    Thanks again for your help.

    No problem :)
Please post another MGADiag report, so we can check that everything is OK.
