How to change resolution?

  Can anyone tell me how to restore the previous resolution or change the screen resolution when accidentally increased the of Windows XP (or any windows in general [NT based]) and when the Safe Mode is not working even because of the higher resolution set by the user which goes beyond the range of the monitor?
