My parents' legit Windows fails validation

Computer purchased from Dell about a year ago. Authentic Windows sticker (XP Pro) and serial number affixed to the side of machine. Computer was taken to repair shop about two months back for complete wipe. Inept repair place could have typed in an incorrect serial number. That's my only guess.
How can I make sure the serial number that Windows Validation is checking is the correct one (the one that matches the sticker)? How can I change the serial number to the right one if it is wrong without reinstalling Windows and losing everything on my computer?
Microsoft was the opposite of helpful over the phone. Any help here would be appreciated more than you know.
Just trying to help my parents...

Magnificent help; thanks so much!
The validation serial did not match the one that came with the computer. The repair shop probably fouled something up.
I used your tool to put the correct serial back in, activated the "new" serial, and apper to be good to go!
Thanks again,
