My girlfriend received this computer as a birthday present last year. It was purchased through an aquaintance of an aquaintance. When it was purchased the windows genuine advantage was downloaded when it was setup at home and was validated as being genuine (which can be verified by reviewing the update history for this computer:malicious software removal tool and anti spyware which both require validation). Now we am being told that it is not genuine and recieve a notification/popup at logon screen which requires us to wait five(5) seconds for something to load before we have to choose either "get genuine now" or "resolve later" and it causes some sort of startup program/application to run as the desktop appears (WGATray.exe). I would like to know what if anything can be done to resolve this issue. Hopefully it does'nt involve disposing of this computer because of microsoft neglegence.

Lightknight,
The copy of XP Pro currently installed is a so-called "corporate" copy that is not sold to individuals, rather it is sold to businesses, gov't, schools, etc. The Volume Licensing Key used to install this copy was blocked, and this is often done if the Key has been compromised, lost, stolen, or if the software agreement under which the Key was issued has expired. The VLK and any software installations done under the Key are invalid.
If the computer has a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) affixed to the top, side, back or bottom of the case, it is very possible that it is still licensed to run that edition or version of Windows. Please look for a COA and if it's there, tell us what Windows Operating System is listed on it, and also tell us if a computer manufacturer's name is printed on it, or if it reads "OEM Software." This link will help you ID the COA: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
If you cannot find the COA, then in all liklihood the computer was never licensed to run a MS operating system. In such case, you might qualify for the Windows Genuine Offer:
What is the genuine Windows offer?
Q: What is the genuine Windows offer? A: The Microsoft genuine Windows offer is designed to help customers who unknowingly purchased counterfeit versions of Windows XP by offering those who qualify a complimentary copy or electronic license key for a genuine copy of Windows XP.Q: What are the details of the genuine Windows offer? A: To help customers who unknowingly purchased a counterfeit version of Windows XP, Microsoft has created two genuine Windows offers for those who qualify:- Complimentary offer: Microsoft will make a complimentary copy of Windows XP available to customers who have been sold counterfeit Windows. Customers will be required to submit a proof of purchase, the counterfeit CD, and a counterfeit report with details of their purchase. Only high-quality counterfeit Windows will qualify for the complimentary offer.
- Electronic License Key Offer: Microsoft will offer an alternative for customers who find out via the WGA validation process that they are not running genuine Windows, but do not qualify for, or choose not to take advantage of, the complimentary offer. These customers will be able to license a Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP online for a price of $99 for Windows XP Home edition or $149 for Windows XP Professional. The Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP will include a new 25-character Product Key and a Windows Product Key Update tool that will allow customers to convert their counterfeit copy to genuine Windows XP electronically.
