Locked Problems with Office 2002 Validation

Recently my Office 2002 started failing validation - never had issues in the past...   Anyway, I went to http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag and ran Office Validation.

This resulted in the error below:

This computer has failed validation. Expand for details.

    Microsoft Office XP Professional:
Validation Incomplete: Office Must Be Activated

The validation process could not be completed because your copy of Microsoft Office has not been activated.

    Activate Office now
    • Start any Office application. The activation wizard will walk you through the steps required to activate Office.

What's confusing is I can go to each Office app, click on Help, Activate and get the dialog "This product has already been activated."

I also ran MDADiag - here are those results:

Any idea why I'm getting "Office Status: 101 Not Activated" ?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,  zzz_cr

    Hi zzz_cr,

Can you try the following steps for me?

    1) Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
    2) Delete the data.dat file.
    3) This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA).
    4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word (from Office XP) and ACTIVATE it.
    5) After product activation is successful, let’s try revalidating (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage): http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en

    Did this work?

    Thanks,
    Michelle

    Michelle,

I renamed both data.dat and data.bak, used phone activation, and IT WORKED.  MGADiag.exe shows Office status = Genuine. OGA link = Validation Successful!    I'm now able to download updates like a legal Office-citizen - Thanks for your help!
