XP Pro Office not valid
- Starting about a week or so ago, every time I open Outlook I get a popup window with the Genuine Advantage Validation saying my copy is not valid. I have a 2002 version of Office that came with a computer I purchased from a corporation many years ago. I was given all the keys. It has always passed validation before. Several years ago I upgraded the C: drive without any problems.
Why is it suddenly being flagged now as not valid?

The Office XP Professional with FrontPage, currently installed on your computer, is Non-Genuine. It was installed using a Volume License Key that Microsoft licensed to itself for use by it's own emplyees. It was leaked to the internet some time ago and is the most widely pirated Office key, to date. It's so common that the 114 error, that you see in the Diagnostic Report, is specific to that single key. Microsoft has decommissioned the key so even if you worked for Microsoft, the key would still not be valid for use.The reason you hadn't see the Non-Genuine message sooner is that Office doesn't have any anti-piracy systems other then Activation and this pirated Product Key is a Volume License Key that doesn't require Activation. The only way for you to have found out that the Office was Non-Genuine would have been if you had gone to http://Microsoft.com/genuine and click the 'Validate Office", gone to the Office Download site and attempted to download Validation protected content or by installing the Office Notifier. Most likely Windows Update recently downloaded and installed the Office Notifer which is what is notifying you that Office is Non-Genuine
Now, I am Not accusing you of piracy. There are a number of reason why your Office would be using a Pirated key. The three most common are:
1) You may have bought the software from a unscrupulous seller who sold you pirated software.
In which case I recommend, if possible, contacting that seller and demand the Genuine Microsoft software, that you paid for or at least a refund. I also recommend submitting a Piracy Report at http://microsoft.com/piracy
or
2) You had your computer worked on (by a repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street) and in the course of fixing the PC, they had to reinstall Office. Instead of contacting you to get the proper Product Key, (maybe due to not knowing it was wrong or due to laziness) they downloaded it from the internet.
In this case, you probably have a Genuine copy (and Product Key) of Office, you just need to uninstall the Non-genuine one and reinstall the software using the proper (Genuine) Product Key
or
3) A repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street may have thought they were doing you a Favor by installing a copy of Office on your computer, "for Free". But in fact he/she installed a Pirated Copy. It's all togeather possible they didn't know they were doing anything wrong and thought they were just being nice.
In this case, the best way to resolve the issue would be to uninstall the software and if you still want to use Office, buy it from a trusted retailer or online store.

All of the Microsoft products on your computer are volume licensing products.
Usually that means the computer, as it does in your case, was at one time used in a business, educational, or governmental organization that is large enough to participate in Microsoft's volume licensing agreements. Before disposing of the computer, that organization should have erased their Volume Licenses for Windows and Office, because according to the Volume Licensing agreements, these programs cannot be transferred with the computer outside of the organization when the computer is sold.
As you are an individual consumer not associated with that kind of big organization, however, your use of these volume licenses would almost always be a nongenuine use of the installed software, regardless of whether it reports as genuine or not.
In the case of the computer itself, if the computer still has a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) affixed to it, chances are excellent that it is still licensed to run the version and edition of Windows described on the CoA, and getting that corrected is not an insurmountable task. You would have to acquire Recovery or Reinstallation discs from the manufacturer if this is a name brand computer, or you would have to acquire a systembuilder/OEM/small manufacturer genuine Microsoft hologrammed installation CD if this computer was assembled by a local small manufacturer. In the event that the computer does not have a CoA affixed, we would have to assume the computer does not have a license to run any version or edition of Windows. In order to Get Genuine, you would have to purchase a license for Windows at your favorite software retailer, or consider participating in the Windows Genuine Offer as described in the FAQ: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EFIAC
In the case of the Office suite of applications, if you did receive an Office Certificate of Authenticity and genuine hologrammed Office discs, you can check them for genuineness at http://www.howtotell.com. If you have genuine Office discs, Get Genuine by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office, restart twice, then install your genuine Office using your discs and the accompanying genuine Product Key.
In the event that you did not receive Office discs and an Office CoA, you do not have a license to run Office. Ah Ha! Now I remember. Number 2 is the answer. I took my computer to CompUSA to have a new drive, new motherboard and some other upgrades four years ago. I didn't have any original disks, since I bought the computer used, I just had the license keys. I do recall now the service guy there telling me something along the lines that he could 'take care of it' anyway. So now, while the original software may have been legal, this is not. :-/
Right now I can't afford to buy a new Office Suite. So... what's going to happen? OK, so now I'm wondering how much will it cost to buy Office pro for XP. The Office Professional 2007 for $329.99 is an upgrade license.
The Office editions offered to you by the OGA program are the more expensive full retail licenses.
