Yet another intractible Vista validation issue - please help!
- My daughter is in tears. She bought a Dell laptop about a year ago, with Vista preinstalled (unfortunately she was too late to have the option of sticking with XP and avoiding the car crash that is Vista). Yesterday, when she booted it, she got the "The windows Vista home premium product key you typed is invalid for activation" message, with the options of changing the key, starting with reduced functionality etc.
I've helped her try all the various fixes reported here, with no success. In particular, when making the "slui 4" step, rather than starting the validate by phone process, it goes back to the start ("invalid for activation").
In desperation, I managed to find the phone number for MS validation, and she called that, to get to the Indian call centre. They were useless, and passed her from pillar to post, in circles.
This is bordering on the criminal of Microsoft! Please, can anyone give any sensible help to resolve this?

- Hello frogbaiter,
I believe Vista's Licensing Store is corrupt or is unreadable for some reason.
Would you try the following to recreate the Store:
1) Open an Internet Browser
2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Reboot Twice
12) You will likely be asked to enter a Product Key. Use th one found on the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer
Thank you,

- I'm afraid this didn't fix the problem. I'm getting my daughter to repeat the process and record carefully what happens so I can post it back here. Unfortunately, their ADSL router seems to be broken at the moment!
MS really cursed the world when they made Vista, didn't they? - Hi frogbaiter,
All operating systems are a curse when they are experiencing problems :-).
Seriously though, Vista isn't really bad, it just had some problems at the beginning. But currently, I think Vista is just a step or two behind Windows 7 (and Windows 7 is awsome). When this issue is all fixed up, I recommend installing Vista's Service Pack 1 and 2. They are full of fixes and security updates that may make your Vista experience a little better.
As to the issue at hand, that record of the process, you are making, should be a big help. You may also want to re-run the Diagnostic Tool and post the report so I can see if anything has changed after running those steps.
Thanks,
Darin MS - Will do - thanks, darin. A new ADSL router arriving tomorrow, hopefully.
- Hi Frogbaiter,
The thread has been inactive for 4 days, so I'm going to assume the issue is resolved and marke the thread as answered. If you still have an issue, go ahead and create a new thread (so it gets my attention), post the updated Diagnostic Report and we'll proceed from there.
Thank you,
Darin MS
