Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine
-
Friday, June 10, 2011 8:21 PM
I have Windows 7 that I bought as a Vista upgrade in October 2009 from Amazon.com. I have been using it ever since then, but now, just in the last week or so for the first time, I've started getting the "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" message in the lower right corner of the desktop screen. Whenever the message shows up, I have found that if I right click on Computer and then click on Properties, the message goes away, but then it returns, sometimes the same day, but not always.
I have no doubt that this copy of Windows is genuine, have no idea why this message is showing up, and have no idea why it is just now doing so, since it has been installed and used on my system for more than 18 months. After reading some related threads, I see that others are having a similar problem, but it appears that in at least some of those cases their copies may have come from less reliable sources than Amazon.
Can anyone help me understand what's going on here?
Thanks.

This sort of behaviour is caused by a 'race condition' where two programs are fighting for control of one file. One of the programs is normally the Anti-Virus - which one are you running? What other security software are you running? What other AV has ever been installed on this machine?

This situation did arise soon after I made a change in antivirus programs.
I recently changed from AVG Free to Avast antivirus, because it seemed like the AVG had gotten to where it was taking forever to update, and my system was unusable while the updating was going on. I was hoping Avast might be better in that regard, but it doesn't seem to be, so apparently AVG wasn't the problem. I uninstalled AVG before installing Avast. I think that's the only security software I'm running... I occasionally do a scan with Malwarebytes, but think it only runs when I tell it to. I'm pretty sure there was a trial version of Norton on this machine originally, but I uninstalled it before installing AVG, which was several years ago.

Friday, June 10, 2011 9:13 PMI ran the diagnostics, and then almost instantly got a screen saying everything had passed (all the items listed were things relating to Firefox configuration). I have not yet restarted my computer, but it seems like no changes were made so I can't see how this can have any effect... can it?

If everything checks out you should not have the problem anymore. Let us know if the problen does reoccur for some odd reason.

You should run the removal tools for both AVG and Norton - it can't hurt, and may well help.AVG Remover - http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilitiesNorton Removal Tool - http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US

After restarting my computer, the message has shown up again, so running the diagnostics apparently did not have the desired effect. I have not yet re-run the AVG and Norton removal tools

After running the removal tools, nothing has changed... still getting the message from time to time. Pretty frustrating to have a feature that makes it look like I've got phony software, when I know that just can't be the case.
Any other ideas what to do? Is there someone at Microsoft I should communicate with about this? I've got the disc and the package it came in.

'still getting the message from time to time' - this makes me think that perhaps you have a number of anti-malware/AV apps running in the background, fighting each other for access to files. What is in the startup axis? - I VERY rarely recommend this, but a HiJackThis log may be worth looking at to check....
