Hi. I am new to these forums so please forgive my ignorance! I have had this laptop for 2 years(ish) and have just started t receive this message on the desktop. I've searched forums to try to find out why this has happened (it is a genuine copy of Windows) and think I have done this right (created my own thread???) by attaching my diagnostic report below. Any help would be much appreciated. (BTW the Windows authentication sticker placed on the bottom of my laptop has worn away and I only have a partial number, so if I need to enter it again somewhere along the line I'm stuck :(

OEM SLP copies of Windows like yours need to link with the SLIC table in the BIOS in order to remain activated. The manufacturer has provided a back up product key for when this fails. Find the COA sticker affixed to the bottom of your computer or in the battery compartment. Copy the product key. Click Start, type "slui.exe 3" and hit Enter. Follow the instructions.

Hi. I did slui.exe 3 command. Unfortunately, the COA sticker was attached to the bottom of the laptop and the code has mostly worn away (if theyd've stuck it in the battery compartment, this wouldn't be such a problem). Reading through all the forums and solutions for this problem, I really get the feeling I'm snookered on this one. But any ther suggestions are more than welcome :) Thanks

We may have deciphered the first, second and fifth blocks of the code but the third and fourth blocks are totally erased. We've tried everything except lemon juice and a hairdryer! It is well and truly worn away :(

Well, if Microsoft ever resorts to secret writing you've got the ticket. :)

That's about all you can do. The embedded key that is showing in the report can't be used to manually activate so you need to resolve the issue without resorting to a reinstall. You can recover from the recovery partition or order recovery disks from HP or a third party provider like Recovery-Disks.com. Unfortunately the recovery software will only restore the computer to factory condition and you will have to reinstall your programs, files and settings. HP does provide recovery partitions so check to see if your computer still has the recovery partition. Instructions are on the HP website. Generally you will see the instruction at the bottom of the first screen when you first start the computer.
