OEM version of Windows 7 Professional now reporting as "not genuine"

I have a HP laptop that was purchased with an OEM version of Windows 7 and paid extra for a "Windows XP downgrade". After some experience with Windows 7, we decided to upgrade the "downgrade". We installed Windows 7 from the OEM disk provided by HP. It did not ask for a product key - it just installed, and validated without any problem. (I cannot find a product key ANYWHERE - not on the machine OR in the packaging) We then proceeded to reinstall all of our application programs, and ran with it successfully for a number of weeks - at least a month, maybe longer. NOW we are presented with a screen that says "Windows 7 build 7600 - this copy of windows is not genuine". Did we get ripped off by HP? I really just want windows 7 to work - would prefer to avoid the aggravation of completely reloading the system . . .

Your computer should have come with a sticker with the product key for the windows that came with that computer. Normally this sticker is either on the side or bottom of the PC. However, I have recently heard that some laptops have the sticker attached inside the compartment that the battery is located.
Hope that helps,
