Heres the deal, I was not a good boy.  I wanted to try Windows 7 for a while so I was able to install a Dell OEM disc on my Compaq Laptop.  This was of Windows 7 professional.  After the 30 day trial ended I was slapped with Not Genuine Messages as such.  Which was true.  Seeing as how I really liked using it I decided to go legit and I purchased a version through my wife's employer which is a VERY respected university.  Seeing as how its a home computer that she does use for work, we did qualify for all the terms and such so its all good there.  Additionally it was for Windows 7 Ultimate so I was able to use the anytime upgrade feature (thank you ms for thinking of that one) and upgrade and use the product key which I was provided and that went very smoothly.

As I am writing this there are a few things I havent tried but probably should.

I havent tried to download all windows updates yet.
The PC restarted a few times during the install, but I havent attempted a restart since I've discovered this issue.

    **Edit**
I forgot to mention that I am getting a Not Genuine Error when attempting to download and install the virtual pc with xp mode feature for windows 7.
    **end edit**

It IS possible for me to do a clean install and upgrade.  (the windows 7 ultimate was an upgrade key, but I do have a fully functional windows vista disc that came with my laptop.  The windows 7 pro hack was a clean install though.

I am hoping and praying that this can be resolved through some carefully considered words from the gurus here as well as some luck on my part.

Please let me know and thanks in advance for you help,

    K. Garza

If the original disk was intended for a dell, it may have had some dell specific changes that are causing problems with the activation files on your computer. If it was me I would just reinstall however you can try a few things to fix it,

run sfc /scannow to scann for corrupt or changed files

Verify that the SPP service is running by typeing services.msc in the search box, hit enter, wait, wait some more, then scroll down through the services until you get to one called Software Protection, make sure it is running, also make sure it is set to automatic (delayed start), If you need more detail to access this just ask.

If the above doesn't work you can try recreating the Licensing Store. (Copied from one of Darin Smith's posts, if it works thank him).

    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

    Hi K_Garza_jr,

I have checked the Product key being used and it is Valid and Genuine. The problem is that Windows had detected that a number of it's protected Activation and/or Validation system file have been modified in some way (either rewritten/replaced or have become corrupt).

To resolve the issue, you will need to correct the Modified files.

First try repairing Windows using System Restore:

    1)    Reboot Vista into Safe Mode

    2)    Click the ‘Start’ button

    3)    In the Start Search field, type: System Restore and hit “Enter” keyboard key

    4)    Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.

    5)    Click the "Next" button.

    6)    Reboot back into Normal mode

    7)    Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode

If that doesn't work, try doing a System Scan. The scan will look for bad system files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

    1)    Login to Vista in Normal Mode (not safe mode)

    2)    Launch an Internet Browser

    3)    Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field

    4)    Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe

    5)    Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'

    6)    In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow

    7)    Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.

If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be to either create a (no cost) support request at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactwga or reinstall Windows.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

Thanks for your help everyone, unfortunately none of the suggestions worked in my case.  I have opened a ticket up with Microsoft and they are working with me via email to resolve it.

Once completed I will post the solution here for future use.

    Thanks for your help,

    Kenneth

    Hello K_Garza_jr,

I like a quick easy solution as much as the next guy, but one thing's for sure in your situation---backing up and offloading your data, then doing a clean installation of Vista using the Compaq discs (no pun intended), then applying Vista SP1 then upgrading to W7 with the disc from wife's work is the ideal way to get it done.
