Win 7 Pro Product Key Not Valid After Computer Repairs
-
Friday, November 13, 2009 9:50 PMI had my Lenovo T500 repaired by Lenovo (under warranty) as it completely froze up. I had installed Windows 7 Professional just before this happened. I got the machine back, now working properly, but Windows is now prompting me to validate the OS again as there has been a "hardware and / or hardware driver change." Lenovo had installed a new motherboard (system board / planar) according to the repair summary. I tried entering the product key that came with Win 7 Pro but it will not accept it. Tried activating it over the phone but it's not accepted. Basically, I'm left with having to buy another key which I will not do - not after spending $200 for 7 Pro.It's not as if I am trying to install Win 7 pro on another machine. What's the work around here???!!

Hello EndlessCT9A,
First off, try these alternate steps to change the product key1) Click the Start button
2) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key
3) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer
4) Click the Next button.
5) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok
6) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)
7) Click the Start button
8) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key
9) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button
10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone
If that doesn't work, try these steps that will recreate Windows 7's Licensing Store. When it recreates the file, Windows will need to repopulate it with Licensing Information so will ask you to enter the Product Key and to Activate (use the Activate by Phone method)
1) Open an Internet Browser
2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop sppsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: slui
9) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key.
Lastly, if neither set of steps resolves the problem, download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

Activating by phone worked. It confirmed the OS as the genuine article. Thanks a lot. This saved a lot of headaches!!- Marked As Answer by Darin Smith MSOwner Monday, November 16, 2009 9:42 PM

Hello NovaDome,
Windows 7 (and Vista) allow the user to install without entering a Product Key. This is called a Keyless Install and when a Keyless Install is done, Windows uses it's own default Keyless Install key. The Keyless Install key acts as a Trial key, can not be activated and allows the user to use Windows for 30 days. If the user wishes to use Windows longer, they must enter a Valid Product Key.
Your Windows 7 is using the Keyless Install key for Windows 7 Professional (*****-*****-CM74G-RPHKF-PW487 <- keyless install key). To continue using your copy of Windows past the 30 day trial, you will need to enter a Valid Product Key.
Please click the 'Start' button, Right-click on 'Computer' and select 'Properties'. In the Window that comes up, click 'Change Product Key' and enter the Product Key that came with your copy of Windows.
If you get a message that says something like "This key can only be used in an Upgrade" this means your Windows 7 is an Upgrade and the Upgrade Process was not done correctly. In this case, please see the 'Install, Upgrade and Activate' section of the Windows 7 Answers Forum for assistance http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windows7
Thank you,

You should not hijack someone else's thread as Darin or others may not see it and it can confuse the issues.
That said, I believe you have an MSDN copy of Windows 7 Professional

I can pretty much guarantee that the installation of Windows on this PC was NOT provided by Asus! The BIOS date is way too early to be compatible with Win 7 - and is a retail versionYour Office installation is also non-genuine, the Key having been Blocked by MS for abuse.

Friday, September 24, 2010 12:43 AMOk, the first installation of window on my notebook provided by ASUS was Winxp, at first I used winxp, but after that, I recieved win7 Pro Product Key from MSDN Academic Alliance, It's free to me. So the BIOS date is too early to be compatible with Win 7. If you have no support for the free product key like that, I have no claim.

Ah - now I get the picture!Compare the Key in the report with the Key you got from MSDNAA - are they the same?If so, then you probably only need to activate by phone....Activate by phone1. Type "slui 4" in the start menu search box, hit enter2. Select country or region3. Dial the number, DO NOT select any menu options, just wait and a person will pick up.4. activate by phone.

Misuris, you need to post in a thread of your own, but I can tell you from the report that your installation of windows is using the Dell SLIC and product key on an acer branded computer that was manufactured prior to the release of windows 7. Also, it appears that there is an activation hack that is emulating the Dell SLIC.
If you have any further questions on this matter please start another thread with the report from above.

Sunday, November 21, 2010 2:22 PMI've got a similar problem - my Gateway froze up and I wound up reinstalling Windows and everything else on my machine using the prompts from the machine. Things have worked fine since then (about a week ago) until I was invited to check to see if Windows was genuine. Since it was when I first bought the computer I thought it would be again, but now the program tells me it's not genuine. The suggestions for Darin were the closest I've seen to my problem, and I tried both methods suggested. Each one wound up telling me to call Gateway, so I"m hoping you'll have other suggestions. My Win7 is Home Premium instead of Professional, so are there alternate programs to fix that?

Tuesday, February 08, 2011 4:27 PMMy question is......... Why try to change key? I am having a problem right now. I am giving my son my old desktop PC that has Win 7 on it. I put a brand new hard drive in it & reinstalled windows on it. Now it sais that my windows 7 is counterfeit. It had done this to me before on another of my machines. I talked to MS people on phone, which some could not even speak English, then I got email support. Finally I had to buy another installation setup. Now, last night on this one, I changed the drive & am exactly in the same boat. Why do we need to change product keys, when our setup is ligit, bought & paid for?? What is going on here? Is it like this with the Apple people. This is starting to get frustrating

Truckerbill,
Please use the Ask A Question button at the top of this thread to start a new thread. This one already is confused because a half dozen posters have been using Reply instead of Ask a Question. You are not getting good service because you are piggybacking on another poster's question regardless of how similar you think your questions are.

Hello,
I'd like to change my product key from PC properties in Windows 7, but I can't find the 'Change Product Key' link at my computer properties. Is the other way secure? (where you can also change the product key from cmd with the following command: slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX)
Or there is another way to do this?
Thank you,
Ma. Gabriela Vicioso

Monday, February 21, 2011 5:14 PMAnswererYes, that is secure. Did you scroll down the System Properties page to the bottom or did you not find the SP page?

Thanks!
I found the SP page and I scrolled it down, but it isn't there :S I don't know why :S it doesn't even have the 'ask for genuine microsoft software' icon that I saw at the same post where I found the command.
I guess I'll try the command, thank you very much!

Gabriela,
Are you using an OEM copy of Windows (preinstalled at the factory)? It may be that you will only see that if you upgrade. The blue Change Product Key link does appear on my systems that use preinstalled Vista but Windows 7 may be different.

No - it should appear on ALL systems regardless of provenance. To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Most Non-Genuine issue look the same regardless of the true underlying cause. So to help minimize the confusion caused by troubleshooting multiple different issues, we ask that all users create their own thread for their own specific issue.
In other words, please do not post "Me Too" messages in other people's threads
You are using a pirated windows. If you want good service you need to post in your own thread.

Please re-read the "Please Read Before Posting" sticky at the top of this forum page and repost in your own new thread using the brown Ask A Question button on the top right.
